First Friday…Live!

We warmly invite you to join us for our once a month “First Friday – Live” Kabbalat Shabbat Service. This format for Shabbat celebrations is now in its third year. This FFL will be the final one of the season. You won’t want to miss it as we prepare for Passover later in the month.

We welcome all to this lively, brief musical Shabbat service. We honor the traditions of Judaism by using familiar prayers and contemporary poetry, songs old and new, stories and other readings. We use a Reconstructionist prayer book. You are invited to join in the singing and share in the readings.

We begin our Shabbat gathering at 5:45pm. The Service itself begins at 6:00 and concludes by 7:00 pm. After the service concludes there is a kiddush and then a vegetarian potluck dinner.

The musical part of the service is led by Jordan Saturen. Jordan plays several instruments and leads the singing of prayers and familiar songs with an open heart and a strong voice and invites everyone to join in. Jordan is from Ashland, Oregon where he is an active member of a congregation that enjoys singing. He is a part of their chorus and of several choruses in SMA. Jordan is bilingual and is married to a natives sanmiguelense. They have two sons and a large extended Mexican family.

The spoken part of the service is led by Judith Jenya, a life-long explorer of Jewish paths and former director of a large synagogue. Judith writes and gives a short, thoughtful talk which is a commentary on the week’s Torah portion. For which she has become well known in San Miguel. She is also a poet, painter and motivational speaker. She has been acknowledged for her social justice work around the world.
Judith was honored as the “International Humanist of the Year” in Europe in 2002. She incorporates the principle of Tikkun Olam into her life and into the themes of the FF-L services. This week’s “d’rash” focuses on the meaning of Passover.

We invite your heartfelt participation. We are building a community and a spiritual home for non-traditional Jews and those who may not have participated in other Jewish observances in San Miguel.

There will be a communal vegetarian potluck following the service. Please contribute a vegetarian or vegan dish to share.

First Friday…Live happens each first Friday of the month at the JC3 (the Jewish Community & Cultural Center), at Las Moras #47 at the corner of Cinco de Mayo, in Colonia Guadiana.
