An Act Of God - theater

“AN ACT OF GOD” by David Javerbaum , directed by Alan Jordan is making its Mexican Premiere in San Miguel de Allende on November 9 -19 at Shelter Theater.

“It’s an hour and a half of comedy heaven” Charles Isherwood NY Times

“AN ACT OF GOD” is based on former Daily Show head writer David Javerbaum’s 2011 book that was heralded as “like the Bible, if the Bible were narrated by Mel Brooks on crack-laced manna.”

An Act of God features Erik Zavala as the Creator himself with a little help from two “Genesistants,” Rodrigo Demian and Sebastian Vallin, the archangels Gabriel and Michael. The production explores religion’s influence on some of society’s most poignant tragedies, like alleged divinely inspired homicides and prejudices against communities that don’t conform to the heteronormative mold. As the action unfolds, Zavala reveals a new set of 10 commandments that reflects a 21st-century outlook, emphasizing LGBTQ rights, the United States’ shortcomings, the absurdity of prayer, and the origins of a post-God state.

The playwright, David Javerbaum has won 13 Emmys, 11 at “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”. Currently a producer of “The Late Late Show With James Corden,” Mr. Javerbaum wrote for The Harvard Lampoon as an undergraduate, and then for The Onion, “Late Show With David Letterman,” and the “Jon Stewart Daily Show” where he wound up as head writer and executive producer.

Yes, AN ACT OF GOD is performed in English with Mexican flair.

We recently sat down with the cast to find out what motivates them.

Shelter: Alan, why did you want to bring this particular play to San Miguel?
Alan Jordan: In 2017, we need laughter more than ever. Also, the play is innovative literature; it’s not just laughter for laughter’s sake.
Shelter: Erik, your character was played on Broadway by Jim Parsons, the star of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ so you have big shoes to fill. How are you getting into the role of God?
Erik Zavala: Well, I meditate. I just let my mind go blank… and I let the spirit move me!
Shelter: Rodrigo, why do you perform?
Rodrigo Demian: Growing up, my sister and all our friends were actors. I feel like theater called me. One day I just gave in and went with it.
Shelter: Sebastian, what advice would you give to a young actor starting out?
Sebastian Vallin: To perform, you must perform somewhere, somehow. Remember you are not alone. I’m just happy that I have the opportunity to practice my art in this important and hilarious show.
Apparently Charles Isherwood of The New York Times agrees, “It’s an hour and a half of comedy heaven..a veritable flood of funny lines.” Tickets for An Act of God, November 10 -19 at Shelter Theater are available at the Biblioteca gift shop “Tesoros” and online at www.sheltervg4.com.
