The Art of Political Cartooning - mixed

“The Art of Political Cartooning” will be the subject of a Democrats Abroad SMA presentation to be offered at La Biblioteca’s Santa Ana Theatre on Wednesday afternoon, September 20 between 3 and 5 pm. Tickets for the program, which will feature 2011 Pulitzer Prize winner Mike Keefe, are available at the Santa Ana Box Office at 200 pesos each. A wine and cheese reception will follow the formal program.

A selection of Keefe’s cartoons, including some wonderful recent work commenting on the current US political situation, a discussion about how he develops his concepts, and a lively Q&A session will comprise the formal program.

Keefe, who was the editorial page cartoonist for the Denver Post for 36 years, has recently moved to San Miguel. His work has also appeared in Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, The New York Times, The Washington Post and in hundreds of publications throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

In addition to his Pulitzer Keefe has won top honors in the Fischetti, National Headliners Club, Society of Professional Journalists and Best of the West contests.

Mike Keefe, the 2011 winner of the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Political Cartooning, will speak about “The Art of Political Cartooning” at the Biblioteca’s Santa Ana Theatre on Wednesday, September 20, 2017, from 3-5 pm. The program will be presented under the auspices of the San Miguel chapter of Democrats Abroad.

Political cartooning holds a special place in the political life of both the United States and Mexico and enjoys a rich, and often controversial history in both countries.

Beloved Mexican political cartoonist, known as Rius, passed away in early August. The NY Times obituary said of him, “Eduardo del Río, a self-taught Mexican caricaturist who weaponized his pen to mock politicians, imperialism, religion, corruption, consumerism and carnivores — getting himself kidnapped and excommunicated and also becoming immensely popular in the process — died on Tuesday (August 8) at his home in Tepoztlán, about 50 miles south of Mexico City. He was 83.”

For 36 years, beginning in 1975, Mike Keefe was the editorial page cartoonist for The Denver Post. Nationally syndicated, his work has appeared in Time, Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, The New York Times, The Washington Post and in hundreds of publications throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

In addition to his Pulitzer Keefe has won top honors in the Fischetti, National Headliners Club, Society of Professional Journalists and Best of the West contests
The September 20 program will include the presentation of a selection of Keefe’s cartoons, including some wonderful recent work commenting on the current US political situation, discussion about how he develops his concepts, and a lively Q&A session at the conclusion of the formal program.

Tickets at 200 pesos each, which include the presentation and a wine and cheese reception at the conclusion of the formal program, are available at the Santa Ana Theatre box office. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Santa Ana Theatre, La Biblioteca, and Democrats Abroad 2018 voter registration efforts.
