Seven talented young Mexican and American opera singers studying in the San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto’s intensive, four-week program are the stars of Mezzo Mania, a July 1st benefit concert presented by Casa de Europa en México, S.C.. All proceeds from the sale of tickets will go to this organization that is dedicated to strengthening multicultural ties between Mexico and the European Union through cultural, academic, economic, scientific and artistic activities as well as tourism and other programs. The Institute’s third season has been made possible by Casa de Europa, which is providing teaching, master class and office facilities at its San Francisco 23 headquarters.

The evening of arias, zarzuela, Broadway show tunes, and ensemble surprises features works by Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss, Mozart, Thomas, Gounod, Weill, Gershwin, Bizet, Lara, and Chapi. The concert culminates in a gran sorpresa final.

The San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto is an intensive program for aspiring young opera singers with major career potential that takes place from June 12 through July 8, 2017. It is headquartered at Casa de Europa en México, S.C., thanks to the generosity of this institution that is dedicated to strengthening multicultural ties between Mexico and the European Union through cultural, academic, economic, scientific and artistic activities as well as tourism and other programs.

Now in its third year, the Institute has more than 20 singers representing China, Puerto Rico, and nine Mexican and five American states. They are taught by an international faculty that has sung and coached at leading opera houses of the world and embodies the historic line of Bel Canto training that began in the late 17th century and continues to this day throughout Europe and elsewhere.

The Institute provides an organic, holistic program that includes voice and linguistic/diction lessons, acting classes and sessions on bodywork, all underpinning the Bel Canto pedagogy. Additionally, singers receive career coaching, participate in master classes, and this year will present five public concerts.

The San Miguel Institute of Bel Canto founders and co-directors are Joseph McClain, founder and former general director of Austin Lyric Opera as well as the founder and artistic director emeritus of Ópera de San Miguel, and Michael Sylvester, who was one of the most important American tenors on the international stage, with leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, Covent Garden and more. During the 1990s, Sylvester sang more performances at the Metropolitan Opera of Radames in Verdi’s opera AIDA than any other tenor. A 1989 article in USA Today named Sylvester as one of the two most important tenors of his generation.
