What single ingredient burns hotter than napalm, was used in early chemical warfare by the Incas and the Mayas, comes in over 1600 varieties, is used as medicine, gets you high, and stars in America’s number one condiment? The chile. Erroneously called a pepper by Columbus, thus burdening us with a persisting misnomer, the chile is the true star of Mexican cuisine. And though other countries outstrip Mexico in terms of production, no other country outshines Mexico in the way the chile is employed in cooking.

On July 27th, Victoria Challancin, whose insightful and colorful cooking classes have been featured on TV, magazines and newspapers and who writes a creative food blog (http://flavorsofthesun.blogspot.com), will provide many interesting facts about chiles in a presentation, Mexican Chiles for Gringos.  At Victoria’s lively presentation, guests will learn not only how to identify and use popular Mexican chiles, but their history and many varieties, as well as their role in art, medicine, and culture.  Victoria’s lifetime affair with history, culture, travel, and food have provided her with a broad base of knowledge which naturally spills over into both her classes and her talks. In addition to providing solid practical information and recipes, guests will learn several preparations and will take home recipes. A delicious meal provided by the members of Mujeres en Cambio will follow this informative discussion with each course featuring various chiles.  Please join us for a very tasty and informative lunch!
