Our School for the Deaf, Rotary - talk

Until recent years, local parents of children with hearing disabilities were desperate to provide those students a quality education. Hearing of this need, members of the Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende – Midday established the Escuela de Educacion Especial, the mission of which is to ensure that all San Miguel de Allende children who are deaf or hearing impaired become literate, independent, and productive citizens who set and achieve life goals.

Come to Rotary Tuesday, October 17, when founders John Doherty, Ron Felton and Walter Scott will share the results of this successful program. The presentation will be at 12:30 p.m. at Hotel Mision, Salida a Queretaro 1, free and in English.

“We now provide bilingual primary, secondary and high school education to children aged 3 – young adult, and after-school vocational training for marketable skills in well-equipped sewing, baking, carpentry and jewelry-making workshops,” said Doherty, who is president of the school.

“There is no other school of its kind in the State of Guanajuato,” he continued. “The school receives no government funding to assist in its operation. The school operates on grants and donations received from service organizations like Rotary and from individuals, foundations, charitable trusts, church groups and fundraising efforts,” he concluded.
