Fiesta at Rancho Fernandez - benefit

by Misty Haskett

Mujeres en Cambio returns to Rancho Fernandez in Atotonilco on March 1st for a fabulous fiesta featuring the flavors of Mexico, the fashions of Isabella Blue, the soothing sounds of Peter Fleming and JK O’Donnell, and fun for all. The rancho is the home of one of the founders of Mujeres en Cambio, Pakina Langenscheidt and her husband, former mayor of San Miguel, Jaime Fernandez. Pakina continues to be an integral member of the Scholarship Committee and works closely with our beca recipients and the rural schools we serve.
The fiesta will begin with drinks and botanas and a buffet luncheon of chicken mole, rice, beans, and tortillas prepared by the rancho cooks and an array of salads and desserts prepared by the members of Mujeres en Cambio. Wine and beverages will be available and coffee and tea will be served with dessert.
While you’re dining in the delightful outdoor atmosphere of the rancho, models will meander among the tables wearing the delicious spring fashions of Isabella Blue of Ciao Bella Boutique. Isabella was a designer and photographer in Los Angeles before moving to San Miguel twelve years ago. She loves Mexico and its people, having lived in CDMX with her family when she was a teenager. It was then she began designing her own clothes and designing has been her passion ever since. Her style is casual, comfortable, bohemian, 100% cotton, and made by local seamstresses. Perfect for the warm San Miguel climate and beautiful on every woman, every size and any age!
After lunch you will be entertained by the musical duo of Peter Fleming and JK O’Donnell. Peter is a guitarist from Canada who moved to SMA five years ago. He has joined up with blues and jazz singer, JK, formerly of the Blues Streak, a group he formed here with the late Ken Basman. The Blues Streak was a featured group at the San Miguel Jazz Festival a few years ago. We’re honored to present Peter and JK at our Rancho Fiesta!
You will also get to meet some of our scholarship recipients from Atotonilco, so bring your Spanish skills or help them with their understanding of English. Find out first-hand what their education means to them and what their hopes are for the future.

The event is Thursday, 1 March; from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $600 pesos and include transportation by bus. Please meet at St. Paul’s Church on Cardo between 1:15 and 1:30 if you need transportation. If you are driving, please stop by St. Paul’s and offer a ride to other supporters of Mujeres en Cambio. Directions and a map will be provided with your ticket.
