La Huipilista Art Space - opening

Huipils are intricately decorated blouses, woven on a blackstrap loom, by indigenous women in many Mesoamerican countries. This work has been done since before the conquest, and the same method is still used today. It is said that textiles told stories, passed on information and described the weaver herself.

Beginning in 2003, I began recreating the huipil as an art form that is to be viewed not worn, to be understood as a symbol rather than clothing. They are meant to reveal stories both contemporary and ancient, and often represent women, social issues, human rights, environmental concerns, etc.that have been concealed. These huipils are life size, mas o menos, crafted from corn husks, bottle caps, plastic market bags, pages out of old books and a variety of other unlikely materials. Others are painted on canvas or paper, stitched with colorful threads by hand or machine. All were inspired by traditional indigenous weavers of Mexico and Guatemala, some of whom I have come to know personally but all for whom I have the greatest admiration.
