Candelaria
pictorial

by Sofie Engström von Alten

Every year Parque Juarez in central San Miguel holds a ten-day plant and flower exhibition called Candelaria. The beautiful, annual display of flowers is taking place this year from February 2nd to February 11th, everyday from 9am to 9pm.

Growers and sellers alike have brought their fresh wares and are displaying them in the beautiful setting of Parque Juarez. Stroll through the garden and you’re sure to find a lovely addition to your backyard, terrace or kitchen window! They’re even selling Venus Fly Traps for those pesky household bugs. Browse the hundreds of mini succulents and take a few home with you —only 10 pesos apiece! For the more ambitious landscapers, vendors are offering beautiful, hardy Bougainvilleas in many fluorescent colors, giant cacti and little saplings ready to be planted! Friendly men with wheelbarrows will provide deluxe transportation for your foliage.

Even if you don’t live in San Miguel and can’t take a plant home with you, or your apartment resembles a jungle already, Candelaria is an enjoyable setting to experience the massive floral displays. Once you’re done ogling the flowers, you can treat yourself to a fresh coconut juice or a cotton candy and watch people play basketball in the large park.
