It is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave, based on the play The King Has Fun by Victor Hugo.
It is a drama of passion, deceit, filial love and revenge that has as its protagonist Rigoletto, the hunchbacked jester of the court of the Duchy of Mantua.
The Duke of Mantua is an incurable seducer and his servant, Rigoletto, supports him in his conquests. Rigoletto, meanwhile, cruelly mocks those around the Duke because he despises them and, in turn, the courtiers hate him. One of their victims is Count Monterone, who, furious that the Duke dishonored his daughter and fed up with Rigoletto’s mockery, casts a curse on them.
Although in public he is heartless, Rigoletto is also a loving father, who does his best to protect his daughter Gilda from court. However, his attempts will prove futile when he becomes complicit in the kidnapping of his own daughter, who has also secretly fallen in love with the Duke.
Rigoletto vows revenge and hires Sparafucile to murder the Duke. But first, he forces his daughter to watch as his beloved flirts with Magdalena, the sister and accomplice of the hitman. Rigoletto sends Gilda to Verona, but she returns and learns of her father’s plan. Meanwhile, Magdalena begs her brother not to kill the Duke and asks him to murder the first stranger who appears instead. And Gilda is the first to enter the inn of Sparafucile…
