Opera Gala, Yunuet Laguna

Tuesday, August 16, 7pm
Casa Europa, San Francisco 23
$450, $750, $950 tickets

A voice like Yunuet Laguna’s comes along rarely, maybe only a handful of times every generation. The young native of Zacatecas, Mexico, was probably destined to be an opera star, but might never have been discovered without the efforts of our own San Miguel MetOpera Trust and a major assist from the San Miguel Bel Canto Institute.

Since the 1930s, some of the greatest singers at the Metropolitan Opera were discovered through the Met’s audition program for young North Americans. Yet it was not until 2018 that the Met opened the competition to Mexico, a part of North America it had overlooked for more than 70 years. The San Miguel MetOpera Trust (SMMT) was created to oversee the Met competition throughout Mexico.

Yunuet Laguna won the 2018 competition, the first year she was eligible to compete. Up until that year, she had never left Mexico and spoke no English. Today she has her own dressing room at the Metropolitan Opera, and has already made her solo debut on the Met stage, this past March, as Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly.

Thanks to her benefactors, the SMMT and San Miguel Bel Canto Institute, Laguna will be giving a single concert in Mexico this year, in San Miguel, at Casa Europa, San Francisco 23, on Tuesday, August 16, at 7pm. Laguna’s concert will include arias by Puccini and Verdi, along with art songs by Granados, Ponce and other composers.
