"Earth is third child of the sun, hovering on the edge of chance
Not so lazy as to leave one
Scorching side turned to the fire.
      Nor cold enough to freeze
Nor small enough to lose its
      Saving gauze of atmosphere
Nor quite so smooth of crust
      As to be forever drowned
      Beneath one total ocean."

                  - Cybernaut by E.G. Valens

The age of the Earth, first seen from space as "The Blue Marble" in 1972, is 4.54 billion years old. The age of human painting, first seen in red ochre and black pigment on cave walls, is 40,000 years old. The age of representational painting, first seen in China, is 2,400 years old. The age of landscape painting, again, first seen in China, is 1,115 years old.

From space we comprehend earth as an active planet composed of the four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. These constituents are constantly in flux. We know infinity exists microscopically and macroscopically. We have ventured beyond the historical depiction of land and sky.

Our new perspective calls for a new genre of "landscape painting." My paintings are of this genre. They examine the place and terrain of this new understanding of the world, a world subject to growth, change, explosion, and rebirth. The paintings are abstract swirling patterns that mix up the elements of earth, air, fire, and water. Planets emerge, fossils bury in the forms, red gas bubbles up from under, clouds hover over surfaces, light creates its own source.

Possessed of an abstract beauty, these images are contemporary landscapes we need to be engaged with. They call on us to widen our view and remind us of energies we cannot visually perceive.

I have been a painter for thirty six years, the last three in San Miguel. I have had over 25 solo exhibitions. My work is in numerous collection both corporate and private. I have taught at two museums and a university in the States. My website is www.kcammarata.com.

Ten paintings of this genre are on view at Galeria 101 ( formerly La 303) , Fabrica la Aurora #12A for the month of August. Opening reception is Saturday August 7th from 5 to 7 pm.
