Improv People, Shoulda! Woulda! Coulda! - theater

Can you imagine being in front of 100 people on stage for an hour, having nothing rehearsed? No script, costumes, sets, or words from a playwright? The Improv People, San Miguel’s favorite (and only!) improv troupe, are a group of actors dedicated to creating theatre in the moment, based on audience suggestions. Not one bit of dialogue, plots, nor characters have been pre-planned. Everything you see on stage is completely improvised and made up on the spot! It’s absolutely exhilarating!

For our first show of the season, we present Shoulda! Woulda! Coulda! as the inaugural performance at the newly renovated Teatro Santa Ana (thank you Jennifer Posner, board members and theatre staff of the Biblioteca!) With the new year upon us, people have been talking about the symbolism of 20/20 and the possibility of creating more clarity and clear vision. Because of that, The Improv People started a conversation about how ‘hindsight is 2020’ and what can be learned from looking back. And that’s how the title and concept of our newest show evolved into “Shoulda! Woulda! Coulda!”

Have you ever experienced a moment of ‘I should've said’ or ‘I could’ve done’? As improv actors, making up stuff in the spur of the moment in front of an audience, it’s easy to fall into the trap of telling ourselves that after a performance.Yet, by its very nature, the art of improv is incredibly generous and forgiving. The tenant “there are no mistakes” allows us the freedom to respond to any given situation, trusting that it’s the right choice, and that we can always find some way to justify it. Wouldn’t it be great to live our lives that way?
