Pete Searles: Hey Gringo! Bolivia and Beyond - theater

British actor and writer Pete Searles, a veteran of stage, screen, and BBC television and radio, "a riveting storyteller," in the words of The Guardian (London), has had his share of adventures in Latin America. So many adventures, in fact — ranging from bizarre and surreal to life-threatening to hilarious — that Searles crafted them into a series of one-man shows under the heading Hey Gringo!

Last year, Searles performed Hey Gringo! A Chile Christmas at the San Miguel Playhouse, and was greeted with standing ovations and requests for a return visit. The time is at hand. Between January 22 and 26 at the San Miguel Playhouse, Searles will give four performances of Hey Gringo! Bolivia and Beyond, a one-man show that has delighted audiences ever since its premiere in Edinburgh twenty years ago.

Searles, who is able to populate a bare stage with a bevy of characters, though the sheer force of his virtuoso acting, gives this brief synopsis of his Bolivia show: "At a bar in Cuzco, in the company of a motley crew of world travelers and drifters, a plot is hatched over a game of darts to pop over the border to seek a fabled cave — rumored to hold the last of the cosmic secrets."

Searles has received so many rave notices that from major newspapers that it is difficult to decide which ones to quote. Here are two among many: "Searles has you in the palm of his hand from the moment he opens his mouth." — The Scotsman. "A stand-up storyteller par excellence. He is Britain's answer to Spalding Gray". — Metro.

For years Searles has toured his shows internationally (United States, Bermuda, South Africa, the Middle East, Far East, and all over Europe). Sell-out shows in the United Kingdom included performances at the Cottesloe / National Theatre, Soho Theatre, Royal Exchange (Manchester), and numerous prestigious literary, arts, comedy, and drama festivals. An adaptation of his Hey Gringo! monologue series was broadcast as the Afternoon Play on BBC Radio 4, winning Critic's Choice awards from Radio Times, The Independent, The Guardian, and The Telegraph.

Hey Gringo! Bolivia and Beyond, will be presented at the San Miguel Playhouse, Av. Independencia 82, Wednesday through Friday, January 22 to 24, at 7 pm, and once more as a 3 pm matinee on Sunday, January 26. Reserved-seat tickets are 300 pesos for the center section, and 250 pesos for the side sections. The Playhouse is located at Av. Indpendencia 82, and features secured free parking and taxi concierge service.

Tickets are available at Boleto City, Mercado Sano, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm and online.
