L'Elisir D'Amore, Donizetti, Opera, Pro Musica

Dear Music Lover,

What could be more appropriate in the week leading up to St.Valentine’s Day than to see Donizetti’s marvelous comic opera The Elixir of Love with its desperate lover (Nemorino) willing to glug down a love potion to win his coy heartthrob (Adina), whilst she is prepared to marry his rival (Belcore) out of jealousy, and a charlatan snake oil salesman (Dulcamara) is willing to make them all happy with his potions — for a fee!!

An Ancient Legend, A Potion of Questionable Origin, and a Single Tear: sometimes that’s all you need to live happily ever after. An effervescent mixture of tender young love, unforgettable characters, and some of the most delightful music ever written, L’ Elisir D’Amore quickly became the most popular opera in Italy. Toss in a feisty female lead, an earnest and love sick young man, a military braggart, and an ebullient charlatan, and the result is a delectable concoction of plot twists, sparkling humor, and exhilarating music that will make you laugh, cheer - and maybe even fall in love! Truly this is the essence of opera buffa -“comic opera” (buffa comes from the same root as the English word “buffoon”.)

The story is based on the famous 12th century Celtic legend of Tristan and Isolde. As the opera opens, Adina is sitting in the village square reading the story from a book. In its many manifestations over the centuries the famous love potion is always present, and there is always a tragic ending. In contrast in ’Elisir D’Amore, the “magic potion” turns out to be no potion at all, and the two young lovers are brought together by virtue of their own actions rather than a magic brew.

We have assembled a stellar cast to fill all these wonderful roles. The superb bass and character actor, Charles Oppenheim, sings the outrageous con man, Dulcamara, and Annabel de la Mora the quixotic Adina. Her would be lover is audience favorite, tenor Rodrigo Garciarroyo, and his arch rival Sergeant Belcore, the marvelous Enrique Angeles, who wowed us with his Don Gionanni last season.
