A Jazz and Blues Festival concert planned for January 24 will show the perhaps heretofore unknown connection between The Beatles and jazz, an early influence in the legendary group’s music.

Beatles member Paul McCartney’s father, Jim, was always playing the music of George Gershwin in the house when Paul was a boy. One of John Lennon’s favorite songs while he was growing up was “Ain’t She Sweet.” The Fab Four also loved to play Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore.”

The musicians at this concert will be Flora Pasquet on vocals, Dulce Resillas on piano, Randy Bernsen on guitar, Gabriel Puentes on drums, and Antonio Lozoya on bass.

Flora Pasquet from Reunion Island began her professional career at 16, touring with some of the most famous artists from the Island scene. Flora got her singing diploma at the contemporary music school, ATLA, in Paris. She founded the group Nuvoya and recorded her first original album, fused with bossa nova, soul, and some traditional island folk music. She has just recorded an album featuring the music of Mexican singer-songwriter giant Armando Manzanero.

Randy Bernsen studied at the University of Miami. During the mid-1970s, he was a part of the Peter Graves Orchestra and was a part of Blood, Sweat & Tears. Bernsen’s debut album was Music for People, Planets & Washing Machines (1986). In 1992, he was involved in Joe Zawinul‘s album, Lost Tribes; in 2003, he recorded a tribute to Jaco Pastorius, Word of Mouth Revisited.

Mexican Dulce Resillas studied at the National Conservatory of Music and at the National Institute of Fine Arts. She has taken clinics with many celebrity musicians and with various professors from Berklee College. She is a disciple of the renowned Mexican pianist, Héctor Infanzón.

Chilean Gabriel Puentes built a large part of his career as a sideman and soloist in México City since 1999, where he became one of the most active drummers in the Mexican capital, allowing him to perform in Europe and in North American permanently. In 2010, Puentes became the first Chilean musician to perform at the Lincoln Center in New York. Born in México City and schooled at the National Institute of Fine Arts, Antonio Lozoya has performed in México, Cuba, and the US, accompanying many great jazz musicians such as Bob Sheppard, Art Lande, Paul McCandless, Othello Molineaux, and Dave Pike. He has accompanied great singers such as Karrin Allyson, Lila Downs, and Magos Herrera and performed around the country with his group The San Miguel Jazz Cats. He is the director of San Miguel de Allende’s International Jazz and Blues Festival.
