Galeria San Francisco presents the work of Los Angeles photo artist Harry John Kerker, in a celebration of upcoming Mexican Independence Day. Mr. Kerker will display a personal tribute to the People of Mexico and San Miguel where the entire project was photographed.

The collection of gallery images includes Day of the dead participants, (Día de Muertos), San Miguel cityscapes, and a large collection of mariachis, street performers and artisans. His style is best described as historic-contemporary, where his subjects are current, but his use of muted color and sepias create a look that is almost timeless. Kerker said, "Much of the photography I shoot in Mexico has a sense that not much has changed in the last hundred years other than the clothing and cell phones. In most cases time has stood still in Mexico and that's what I try to capture."

Kerker's experience in Mexico goes back over thirty years, when he was a creative director at Young & Rubicam Los Angeles, responsible for Mexico tourism campaigns in the US. Kerker said, "What's changed most about me since then is my admiration of Mexican culture and the people. At the time Americans only wanted to hear about beaches and endless margaritas. Fortunately I changed and I believe American tourists are more sophisticated now and appreciate how much more there is to Mexico. I hope my photographs do justice to this great country and the people who live here.

Mr. Kerker is also in the process of shooting a new project in San Miguel called Diego Rivera Re-Imagined where he will restage eight of Rivera's most famous works with the help of talented group of San Miguel artisans and theater people. The first piece in this project, which he calls Iniquidad, based on Rivera's Nude with Calla Lilies will be unveiled during the evening for discussion with the artist.
