Galeria Izamal, 26 Year Anniversary - opening
By Henry Vermillion
In November 1992, Galeria Izamal had its grand opening in a not-so-grand 12-by-12-foot space in the Meson San Jose, off the patio of the Meson San Jose Restaurant. The original members were Julian Fedorak, Rocio Hoffmann, her husband Manuel Lizárraga, Estela Macias, Ed Osman, Henry Vermillion, Rick Welland, and Britt Zaist. The name “Izamal” was the idea of Lizárraga, a native of Yucatan. Besides being a city in Yucatán, Izamal was the name of the Mayan god of artisans and craftsmen.
On Saturday, November 17, from 6–8pm, Galeria Izamal celebrates its twenty-sixth anniversary with a gala champagne and musical opening for friends and for the public. Since 1996, the gallery has been located at Mesones 80, next door to the Ángela Peralta Theater. As a special thanks to collectors who have supported Izamal’s artists over the years, all art purchases (with limited exceptions) on November 17 will be discounted 20 percent.
Izamal has featured many distinguished local artists and jewelers over the years. Among them are Peter Leventhal, Marion Perlet, Keith Miller, Archie cartoonist Stan Goldberg, Javier Garcia, Bob Johnson, Pat Wilds, John Fulton, and Mike Kleimo. In our early days, we also showed original works of Mexican masters such as Jose Luis Cuevas, Roberto Montenegro, Francisco Zuniga, and Rufino Tamayo. The gallery still has a few works by John Fulton, who, in addition to having been the most successful American bullfighter, was an excellent and successful painter as well.
Galería Izamal has been a cooperative since its beginning. Its members share the rent, light bill, and other expenses, as well as the work. Sale prices go directly to the artists. As always, the gallery offers a wide variety of contemporary styles of painting and jewelry.
Current Izamal members are jewelers Maria Bracho and Wolfgang Lichter, and painters Juan Ezcurdia, Leslie Jakobovits, Roberto López Fuentevilla, Cissy Smith Marks, Bill Morrow, Henry Vermillion, and Britt Zaist (who also serves as gallery manager).
