Each year, the Writers’ Conference selects a book by one of the upcoming keynote speakers to be featured for the Big Read. We encourage everyone in town to read the book and then to join one of many Big Read book discussion groups that form all over town. Each group will meet sometime between January 27 and February 7. Then, all Big Read group participants are invited to a gala reception before the Conference, on Sunday, February 9, 2020.
This year, the Big Read book is Lost Children Archive by Valeria Luiselli, who is a new celebrity in the international literary world. The Big Read committee selected Luiselli’s novel, partly because of the sensation the book has caused in the world of literature, and partly because the topic of the book is so incredibly relevant to one of the most alarming issues of our times.
Lost Children Archive is one of only thirteen books worldwide to be nominated this year for the prestigious Booker Prize. In addition, the author, Valeria Luiselli just won a coveted MacArthur “Genuis” Grant, and she was recently featured in a major article in Vanity Fair. Her presence at our Conference is an extraordinary opportunity for us to meet this new literary celebrity in person, and we believe many people will want to have read this book that is creating such a sensation.
We will make the official announcement of the Big Read and the selected book at the November 14 Literary Sala monthly reading, 5:00 PM at the Aldea Hotel. We hope to have the book available for purchase at that event, and it will be possible to join, or volunteer to host, a Big Read Book Discussion Group.
