Posadas - talk

By Aldo Ibarra Aviles

Some people say Mexico has a peculiar way to celebrate any festivity. From birthdays, “quinceañeras”, funerals, and one of those events that happen once in a year, Christmas. A time of the year where we have some things for sure, fun and food. Christmas for many people is celebrated on the 24th leaving the 25th as the “Recalentad Day”. For other people Christmas begins just after the Day of the Dead and ends up on February, during the celebrations for Candelaria Virgin. But between all these festivities we have a special moment, a special celebration for unity, for love, for sharing unique moments with family, friends, neighbors, and more, the Posadas.

Come and join us in this lecture about the Posadas in Mexico. We will learn a general overlook about Christmas celebration in Mexico, about the religious and cultural backgrounds, about the food, about the time, about the Piñatas, the art, and more. Everything we see on the streets during Christmas has a different meaning for Mexicans. From the traditional “star piñata” or the Nativity scene to the “nochebuenas” (and the story behind the name). Mexico gives a different touch to the Christmas celebration which is captured during the Posadas. When did the Posadas start in Mexico? Who started them? What is the basic kit for starting a Posada in your neighborhood and not be seen as the drunk neighbor? We will try to answer these questions during this lecture.

Come and join us this upcoming December 13th at 3:00 PM in Teatro Santa Ana at the Biblioteca for this informative lecture on Posadas in Mexico. The cost per person is $150 pesos.
