Rebozo Exhibit, Rotary, benefit - exhibit

The rebozo, a classic Mexican woman’s garment, is a long piece of cloth that looks like a cross between a shawl and a scarf. For the sixth year in a row, the Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende is hosting an event that celebrates the rebozo, and the proceeds will help raise funds for the Hospital General, to purchase wheelchairs and much-needed endoscopes.

The event, called Pasarela del Rebozo, will take place on Wednesday, April 24, at 6pm, in the convention center at the hotel La Casona, Camino Viejo Al Panteón No. 9 (right between the Panio Restaurant, Salida a Celaya 69, and Luna de Queso).

Tickets for the event are 200 pesos, and may be purchased at the door, or in advance, at Boleto City, the box office on the second floor of the Mercado Sano, Ancha de San Antonio 123, Monday through Saturday, 11am to 5pm.

The event is, in effect, an indigenous fashion show. Models from the Casa de la Cultura, along with women of the Rotary Club, will demonstrate the different ways in which this garment can be worn.

For centuries, the Mexican rebozo was associated with women of low economic status, but with the passage of time, and the use of a higher grade of fabric, the garment began to find its place among the middle and upper classes. One of the most celebrated wearers of the rebozo was Frida Kahlo, who carries the garment in several of her self-portraits and photos.

The origin of the rebozo is uncertain. Various accounts place its genesis in either India or the Spanish Mantillas. The first mention of the rebozo in written records dates from 1572, when Friar Diego de Duran described it as a garment worn by mestizo women to cover their heads when entering the church.

The Pasarela del Rebozo, organized by the Rotary Club San Miguel de Allende, is not only a benefit for the Hospital General, but a celebration of a cherished totem of Mexican history.
