March To Denounce Corruption, Yo So SMA

The Insults are mounting up! Yo Soy San Miguel says enough!

Yo Soy San Miguel de Allende, a group of local Mexican citizens organized to respond to problems facing our city, invites you to a peaceful march on Saturday the 19th of January, 2019 at 4 PM. We march to keep our Historic Center as patrimony of the people of San Miguel, and to not let it be sold or privatized. Our voices will be heard only if we all march together. We will meet at the Plaza de los Insurgentes (Plaza Garibaldi-- junction of Organos and Calzada de la Luz)) and walk to the Jardin Principal.

Please be assured this march is NOT a political activity. Its intent is solely to denounce corruption.

The four political activities foreigners are prohibited from participating in are: 1) voting; 2) running for office; 3) financing electoral campaigns; and 4) participating in political rallies, events or demonstrations. Outside of these, expats have the same rights as Mexicans — and denouncing corruption is not only a right, but an obligation.

PLEASE COME!

The Municipio has passed a law to charge us to park our own vehicles on the streets of San Miguel de Allende. It is the only such tax in all of Mexico.. In reality, it is a way to pay for the illegal contract the city government negotiated to privatize public spaces in San Miguel so that a private corporation can profit at the expense of residents and visitors. The contract, signed one year ago, is still kept secret by the municipal government.

Residents have also seen property taxes increased without significant improvement in city services; and those who rent rooms to tourists are being taxed at the same rate as speculators who bought dozens of condos to rent via Airbnb.

The present city government continues to act in secret and behind closed doors, disregarding all transparency required by law in Mexico. In the meantime, crime rates are soaring. We demand security-- not parking meters. SECURITY YES, PARKING METERS NO!
