Richard Dowling - concert

Dear Music Lover,

All ragtime and Dowling fans get ready for the concerts of the season! Richard Dowling returns to San Miguel to recreate his historic debut of the complete piano works of Scott Joplin, performed in Carnegie Hall exactly 100 years after Joplin’s death in New York and 150 years after his birth. Dowling is the first musician to present Joplin’s entire canon, consisting of 53 rags, marches, waltzes, and cakewalks. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear Scott Joplin’s impressive oeuvre performed in two recitals: Thursday and Friday, March 15 and 16 at 5 pm at St. Paul’s Church, Calle Cardo.

The New York Times praised Dowling, calling him “an especially impressive fine pianist,” and celebrity ragtime pianist Max Morath said “Richard Dowling's mastery of the Joplin rags invokes a tenderness that charms us and a technical command that inspires our admiration.” Dowling himself explains his vision of recreating Joplin’s works as being “guided by a desire to honor the wishes of Scott Joplin …To that end I have purposefully chosen to perform Joplin’s works mostly unembellished as he desired, indulging in only a few improvisational flourishes in repeats from time to time.”

While Dowling is particularly known for his expertise in Joplin’s style, he is also a renowned classical pianist, performing in concert halls such as New York at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Since the premiere at Carnegie Hall in 2017, Dowling began an almost 100 concert tour honoring the sesquicentennial and centennial of Joplin’s birth and death, respectively. Nominated for a Grammy Award, his Complete Piano Works of Scott Joplin 3 disc set was released by Rivermont Records.

Thursday’s concert will include such favorites as Maple Leaf Rag, The Augustan Club Waltzes, Kismet Rag, Binks Waltz, Fig Leaf Rag, Peacherine Rag, The Cascades, Pine Apple Rag, and The Easy Winners.

Friday’s recital will feature some of his greatest works, like the Entertainer, Gladiolus Rag, Wall Street Rag, Solace, Sugar Cane, and A Breeze from Alabama. In the words of Dowling, “foremost is my goal to reveal Joplin’s compositional mastery by carefully observing phrasing, voice leading, placement of rests, use of ties, articulations, and dynamics, and by sensitively balancing the melody and accompaniment between the hands and discreetly manipulating the pedals for effect.” The energy and nuance of this spectacular concert should not be missed!

Tickets for these concerts are $150, $300 and $400 pesos donation each, and are on sale through our web site (with no booking fees), at Solutions on Recreo 11, and at the Bookshop in the Biblioteca Pública; and at the concert 45 minutes before performance time.
