Festival Event Highlights Fusion of Jazz and Rock ‘n’ Roll

As part of the extraordinary concerts of the XXIV International Jazz and Blues Festival, there will be a presentation of “Jazz Meets Rock,” this Saturday, July 28, at the Angela Peralta Theater at 7pm.

The fusion of rock ‘n’ roll with jazz has existed since the birth of rock—one might even argue that folks like Cab Calloway, Louis Prima, and especially Louis Jordan helped invent it. As jazz moves through a new century and early rock stars and fans move into their 70s, there’s still plenty of choice territory where the two styles can intertwine.

Many jazz artists who were active in the 1950s will tell you that the rise of rock ‘n’ roll marked the death of jazz as a form of popular music. While there might be truth in that observation, it seems equally true that without jazz, rock ‘n’ roll might never have happened; at least it wouldn’t have happened as it did. The connective tissue between jazz and rock ‘n’ roll is the post-WWII rhythm and blues music performed by artists such as Louis Jordan, Roy Brown, Wynonie Harris, and many others, most of whom came out of the Big Band Jazz Swing Era.

During the ’60s and ’70s, large English groups such as The Rolling Stones, The Yardbirds, Eric Clapton, The Cream, Steve Winwood, among others, had a lot to do with blues music and influenced the birth of rock. In the same way, figures like Jimmy Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and later Los Lobos, the latter ones with a great Latin influence, began to emerge in the United States. The musical style of Creedence Clearwater Revival combined rock ‘n’ roll with other genres like gospel, country, and swamp rock. In this way, the rock was fused with different styles.

The musicians who will perform at this event have an extensive musical career—Kiko Kornejo on voice and guitar, Julián Arcos on the guitar, Uriel Orozco on piano and keyboards, Rick Shlosser on drums, and Antonio Lozoya on bass and musical direction.
