Comida Tradiciónal con Las Rancheritas

by Misty Haskett

San Miguel de Allende is famous for its urbane restaurants and colonial architecture but there is another side to the area we rarely have the opportunity to experience, the campo, the countryside. There are over 500 small communities around SMA and Mujeres en Cambio is inviting you to visit one of them for their 5th annual “Comida Tradiciónal con Las Rancheritas” on Thursday, July 26 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in Agustin Gonzales, a community located just 20 minutes from San Miguel near the pyramid of Cañada de la Virgin.

This traditional Mexican luncheon will be prepared by the women of Las Rancheritas, Mexico’s only rug hooking cooperative. Not only are they excellent craftswomen but they are also fabulous cooks, experts in the preparation of dishes passed down from their indigenous ancestors…and everything is prepared under strict sanitary conditions. Tables will be laden with pots of puerco con chili, chiles rellenos, papas con queso, nopalitos ensalada, carne guisada, homemade fire-cooked tortillas, an array of salsas and more. This is a rare treat indeed!

The luncheon will take place at Rancheritas Event Center located just outside the village on a bluff with a 360 degree view of the mountains, Presa de Allende, and San Miguel. In addition to the sumptuous food, guests will have the opportunity to view and purchase the charming hooked rugs of Las Rancheritas in their craft store and the stone sculptures hand carved by the men of Agustin Gonzales. You will also be able to meet the artisans who create these treasures.

Tickets to this enjoyable one-of-a-kind event are 500 pesos and are available along with directions and information concerning transportation at Solutions Mail Service, Recreo 11; Abrazos Boutique, Zacateros 24; and Tesoros at the Biblioteca, Insurgentes 25.

Mujeres en Cambio is a nonprofit organization that provides scholarships to over 170 underserved young women in and around the San Miguel area from 8th grade through university. MEC is all-volunteer organization so there are no staff costs and over 90% of all funds raised go toward scholarships.
