Fountains of Unidad Deportiva, Rotary - talk

(NOTE: This presentation had previously been advertised and scheduled for May 22, 2018. Due to circumstances beyond our control, the meeting on that date had to be canceled. It now will take place on July 24, 2018.)

The Fountains of Unidad Deportiva – It sounds like a spring with miraculous, curative waters. In reality, it doesn't even exist. Look around and you'll notice that there are virtually no public drinking fountains in our city or even our parks.

When it comes to recreational facilities in SMA, Unidad Deportiva is the largest. The average number of people using the facility is 2000 per week. Boasting 4 tennis courts, 4 basketball courts, two soccer fields, a weight room, and a boxing gym plus a running/walking track, and 4 Pickleball courts, you would think this facility has it all. What it doesn't have is a single drinking fountain. Sure, there's water (or sodas or chips) for sale when the concession stands are open, but their operating hours are inconsistent. During school events (which happens multiple times every year) there can be 500 or more school-age children playing all manner of sports, but no place to rehydrate. Partnering with Club Rotario de San Miguel, the Midday Rotary Club under the leadership of past-president Fred Collins is planning to add 3 water stations that will have two drinking fountains and a spout for filling water bottles. Plentiful water is something Collins is familiar with. He is a native of Michigan, a state surrounded by the Great Lakes, North America's largest source of freshwater. Collins was an outdoor contractor when he retired and moved to SMA with his wife Barbara 5 years ago. This exciting and ambitious project could well be the forerunner to providing more safe, clean, and accessible water throughout public areas in San Miguel de Allende. Come to hear more with San Miguel de Allende's Midday Rotary Club Past President Fred Collins.

The presentation is Tuesday, July 24 at 12:30 PM at the Hotel Mission de San Miguel (Molina) on Salida de Queretaro #1. Parking is free and the hotel is easily accessible by bus.
