Life Beyond the Breaking Point, UU Service - spirit

by Jon Sievert

Visiting minister Reverend Shawn Newton explores the vulnerability at the heart of the human condition at this Sunday’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Service. He looks at life’s fragility and the vulnerability it brings, but also the gift of resilience that is so often a part of how we meet life’s greatest challenges.

We all have days when we experience some discomfort, fatigue, even darkness. At such moments, it may help to remember that history has shown that the most successful lives were filled with many moments of darkness.

Rev. Newton is the Senior Minister of the First Unitarian Congregation of Toronto, where he has served since 2007. He began his undergraduate studies in the Conservatory of Music at Oberlin College, eventually completed a bachelor degree in religious studies at the Harvard Extension School, and later received a Master of Divinity from Harvard Divinity School. He is a Doctor of Ministry candidate at the University of Toronto/Toronto School of Theology; the focus of his research is the role of emotion in the context of preaching and worship.

In preparing for ministry, Shawn served five different congregations, from Dallas to Boston to Cleveland. He has served on the Advisory Board of the Unitarian Universalist-United Nations Office and the International Council of UUs' Mentoring Coalition with the Unitarian Universalist Churches of Kenya. He is currently a member of the Ministerial Fellowship Committee. In his spare time, Shawn loves to travel and take in theatre and classical music at every opportunity. He and Bob Gauthier, his partner of almost 20 years (and husband for ten), are in the process of becoming Canadian citizens.

Special Music is provided by Lauren Osornio and Almitri Tzigane. The service pianist is Paula Peace.

The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at La Posada de Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio #15, and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation, and gender identity. The room is wheelchair accessible. For more information, visit our website at www.uufsma.org.
