Maria Abel Concert Series
In 2018, the Metropolitan Opera’s annual vocal competition, known as the Laffont Competition, which previously had been open to young singers in the United States and Canada, was expanded to include Mexico. The inclusion of Mexico had been long overdue, and the Met quickly discovered the wealth of vocal talent south of the border. Some of the winners have already gone on to have international careers.
Two of the four Mexican winners of the 2024 Laffont Competition, mezzo-soprano Daniela Cortés and baritone Esau Alvarez, accompanied by pianist Mitchel Casas, will display their vocal skills in a recital of opera arias and art songs at Casa Europa, San Francisco #23 in Centro, on Saturday, March 15, at 5pm. The concert is the third installment of a recital series named for the late Maria Abel, past president of Casa Europa, and is sponsored by the Bel Canto Institute of San Miguel.
The concert will include works by Verdi, Richard Strauss, Mozart, Schubert, Bizet and Massenet, along with music of Hispanic composers.
