One of Mexico’s most beloved and colorful traditions is the Dia de Muertos holiday. From the end of October until the start of November, Mexico is a land of altars, catrinas, candles, marigolds, fruit, incense and other offerings to honor the dead.
On Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27, San Miguel residents and visitors will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the centuries-old tradition at a new festival, Carnaval de los Muertos.
The setting is the Villa Parajitos, a tranquil, private enclave of verdant land, gardens and mesquite trees, tucked away in Col. La Lejona, not far from Centro. Entrants to the festival will find two stages of live music (cumbia, classical guitar, singer/songwriters, mariachis, etc.), mojigangas, donkey rides, art installations, a market of handcrafted Mexican items, and food courts set up by various restaurants, among them Cent’Anni, Don Taco Tequila, Ava Singh and Trino Restaurante.
Ticketholders will have access to multiple workshops, some for adults and some geared for children. Learn Mexican ancestral cooking from master chef Ruben Vazquez; attend a workshop on applying Catrina makeup (art supplies are provided, but bring items of clothing if you want to paint them as well); get a photography lesson from award-winning lensman Al Rabi; let acclaimed artist Joaquin Sierra teach you the art of the ofrenda, and learn how to construct a Dia de Muertos altar. For children, there will be a course in cookie painting, an aerial dancing class with Jenny Salas, and other workshops.

Una de las tradiciones más queridas y coloridas de México es la festividad del Día de Muertos. Desde finales de octubre hasta principios de noviembre, México es tierra de altares, catrinas, velas, caléndulas, frutas, incienso y otras ofrendas para honrar a los muertos.
El sábado 26 y el domingo 27 de octubre, sanmiguelenses y visitantes tendrán la oportunidad de sumergirse en esta tradición centenaria en un nuevo festival, el Carnaval de los Muertos.
El escenario es la Villa Parajitos, un tranquilo enclave privado de verdes tierras, jardines y mezquites, escondido en la Col. La Lejona, no lejos del Centro. Los asistentes al festival encontrarán dos escenarios de música en vivo (cumbia, guitarra clásica, cantautores, mariachis, etc.), mojigangas, paseos en burro, instalaciones artísticas, un mercado de artesanías mexicanas y espacios gastronómicos instalados por varios restaurantes, entre ellos Cent'Anni, Don Taco Tequila, Ava Singh y Trino Restaurante.
Los que compren boleto tendrán acceso a varios talleres, algunos para adultos y otros para niños. Aprende cocina ancestral mexicana con el maestro cocinero Rubén Vázquez; asiste a un taller de aplicación de maquillaje de Catrina (se proporciona material artístico, pero trae prendas de ropa si quiere pintarlas también); recibe una clase de fotografía del galardonado lente Al Rabi; deja que el aclamado artista Joaquín Sierra te enseñe el arte de la ofrenda, y aprende a construir un altar del Día de Muertos. Para los niños habrá un curso de pintura de galletas, una clase de danza aérea con Jenny Salas y otros talleres.
