THE DIVAS
by Jack Neary

The Divas was born as a ten-minute play at the Boston Theater Marathon of ten-minute plays. It was so successful, that Mr. Neary wrote several more short, thematically connected plays which eventually became “The Divas.” It involves two professional actresses “of a certain age,” Bethel (played by Antonia Banewicz) and Clarice (played by Marjorie Burren), who we see, as the play opens, watching a rival actress onstage in a role they both feel they should have played. Their friendly / unfriendly rivalry continues thru the course of the play, as we see them auditioning for the same role, discussing a gala event that features the both of them, and thru other trials and tribulations, revealing the lengths these characters will go to win, until the time comes when winning is no longer the objective.

The play reunites Antonia Banewicz and Marjorie Burren, who recently appeared together in Playreaders’ “The Way of all Fish,” and includes the delightful Rick Franz, recently onstage in Playreaders’ “Dead Man’s Cell Phone,” who plays several men including a director, and a publicist. The hilarious relationship between these two actors makes for a delightful and very funny evening of theater. Come and enjoy.
