A beautiful and intimate work, the Mass in D major was originally written by Antonín Dvořák in 1887 for chorus, soloists and organ, and only in 1892 was it orchestrated by the composer. It is also called Lužanská mše (Lužany Mass) after the chapel in Lužany for which it was written. Built only a few years before the composition of the mass, the 1875 Johnson organ played by US organist Charles Raines will be the perfect instrument to accompany this work, which will be conducted by Artistic Director Malcolm Halliday. Several other selections by this wonderful Czech composer of the Romantic era will round out the program. The concert will last about an hour.

Chorale San Miguel presents concerts in large choral format, principally Masses, Oratorios, a cappella sacred music, and other choral and orchestral compositions of the last four centuries. Our venue is the historic Tercera Orden in the San Francisco convent complex, dating from the early 17th century, with excellent acoustics for choral music, as well as a lovely Johnson pipe organ built in 1875, and installed in the convent in the fall of 2023. Several free concerts are presented each year featuring the pipe organ, often in combination with instrumentalists or soloists.
The Chorale is comprised of 30-40 auditioned singers, of whom a significant portion are professional singers, joining forces with talented area volunteer choral singers. Auditions are held periodically to augment the size of the chorus according to programming and performance needs for future concerts. The Chorale draws on local and regional participants, including orchestra musicians from regional professional orchestras in Guanajuato and Queretaro.
Malcolm Halliday is the Artistic Director and Mauro Ledesma is Assistant Conductor.
