"Departures" follows Daigo Kobayashi a cellist who loses his job and moves back to his hometown with his wife Mika. Struggling to find work, Daigo answers an ad for what he believes is a travel agency but turns out to be a funeral home specializing in the traditional Japanese ritual of "encoffinment," where the deceased are prepared for cremation.
Despite initial hesitation, Daigo takes on the role of an "encoffiner," and, through his work, begins to develop a deeper appreciation for life, death, and the human experience. Along the way, he forms a close bond with his boss, Ikuei Sasaki who becomes a mentor and father figure to him.
"Departures" is a moving and poignant exploration of the beauty and dignity of life, even in its final moments. The film won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and the Grand Prix at the 2009 Montreal World Film Festival.

Following the screening there will be a film analysis and discussion with independent filmmaker and scholar Elías Nahmías who has studied and worked in every aspect of filmmaking .

A Special Day is a 1977 Italian drama film directed by Ettore Scola and starring Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni who deliver great performances. Set in Rome on May 8, 1938, during Adolf Hitler's visit to the city, the film follows two neighbors, Antonietta, a housewife, and Gabriele, a radio broadcaster, who find themselves alone in their apartment building as everyone else has gone to attend the Hitler parade.
Over the course of the day, the two strike up an unlikely friendship and find solace in each other's company, sharing their fears, dreams, and secrets. As their bond deepens, they are forced to confront their own loneliness and isolation in a time of political turmoil and uncertainty. "A Special Day" is a powerful exploration of human connection, resilience, and hope in the face of adversity. In 2008, the film was included on the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage’s 100 Italian films to be saved, a list of 100 films that "have changed the collective memory of the country between 1942 and 1978.

"The Idiots" is a 1998 Danish film and starring The film follows a group of young adults who, led by a man named Stoffer (Albinus), pretend to be mentally disabled in public as a way to confront societal norms and challenge the boundaries of acceptable behavior.
As the group's experiments become increasingly extreme, tensions rise both within the group and with the outside world. The film explores themes of identity, conformity, and the nature of human connection through its unconventional narrative structure and provocative subject matter. "The Idiots" was the second film in von Trier's "Golden Heart Trilogy," which also includes "Breaking the Waves" (1996) and "Dancer in the Dark" (2000).

"In the Mood for Love" is a 2000 romantic drama film directed by Wong Kar-wai and starring Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung. Set in Hong Kong in 1962, the film follows Chow Mo-wan (Leung) and Su Li-zhen (Cheung), two neighbors who discover that their respective spouses are having an affair. As they grapple with their shared sense of betrayal and loneliness, Chow and Su develop a deep emotional connection and fall in love.
Despite their growing feelings for one another, the pair never act on their love, choosing instead to maintain a platonic relationship out of respect for their partners and societal norms. The film explores themes of longing, heartbreak, and the complexity of human relationships, all set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing Hong Kong.
"In the Mood for Love" is known for its lush visuals, evocative score, and masterful performances by Leung and Cheung. The film received widespread critical acclaim and won numerous awards, including the Technical Grand Prize at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.
