Food in Film Festival

Thur, Fri, Sat, Feb 27, 28, Mar 1; 11am, 3pm, 5pm
Teatro Santa Ana, Biblioteca 50a
$450 movies, $100 lectures

In 2015, Eva Eliscu, Rhonda Lerner, Ruth Milken and Kirsten West, four ladies from four different places in the world, met over afternoon coffee at the Biblioteca. Eva had just given a lecture called “The History of the Dining Table,” and naturally, the talk turned to food, but also to another shared interest: cinema. The idea for a Food in Film Festival, screenings of movies related to food, along with catered events sponsored by top local chefs and restaurants, was born.

The festival was a hit from its first edition in 2016, and it is back this year by popular demand, the tenth anniversary year of its conception. In a fitting bit of symmetry, this year’s festival is being held at the Biblioteca Publica, in the Santa Ana Theater.

Food in Film Festival 2025 will take place over three days – February 27, February 28 and March 1. Each day, there will be a film screening at 11am and 5pm, and a lecture at 3pm. Films for this edition include classics such as Like Water for Chocolate (Mexico, 1992) and Babette’s Feast (Denmark, 1987), along with two recent documentaries, Love, Charlie: The Rise and Fall of Chef Charlie Trotter (USA, 2021) and Ella Brennan: Commanding the Table (USA, 2016), and two acclaimed foreign films, Sweet Bean (Japan, 2015) and The Taste of Things (France, 2023).

The three lectures, in consecutive order, are: “Chocolate: Food of the Gods,” presented by international chef Kirsten West; “Fungivora: A Passion for Mushrooms,” presented by Olga Daniela Vasquez and Juan Pablo Reyes; and “Tequila Emblema,” presented by Alexandro Cavada, owner of Disco Marisco. (That last lecture includes a free tasting.)

Tickets for individual movies are $450 MX, and each screening includes servings of botanas and wine. (Other beverages are available as well.) Lecture tickets are $100 MX. A Full Access ticket for all nine events can be purchased for $2,700 MX.

The entrance to the Santa Ana theater is Relox 50A, on the right side of the Biblioteca on Insurgentes. Tickets will be sold at the theater each day of the festival, starting one hour before each event. Advance tickets will not be available at the Biblioteca.

If you wish to purchase advance tickets for cash or card in person rather than online, please visit Johnny’s Piano Bar at Mesones 101 in Centro during the cabaret club’s business hours, Wednesdays through Sundays.
