Returning from the opening of his major exhibition in the Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez in Zacatecas, Pascual Hijuelos went immediately to work on a new series of paintings. But unlike his usual, fantastically dramatic, hard edge, color field works, these new creations have taken on a softer dimension. The beautifully rendered colors are still there, but the hard edge geometric shapes have given way to soft and equally dramatic curves. At a quick glance, some of the curves seem to move.

Proud of his Cuban heritage, Hijuelos seems to cull from the land of his parents; his work has rhythm, is sensuous and seems to live at its own joyful beat.

Having apprenticed with some of the New York School of Art artists in those intoxicating decades after the war, Hijuelos learned well. The artist eventually moved to Mexico after successful exhibits in the New York Art scene, traveling throughout Europe, and avidly soaking in the diverse genres of post war contemporary art. The move seems to connect him more to his Latin roots. The artist counts savvy New Yorkers and Mexico City sophisticates as his collectors. There are occasional visits to Miami and New York, Art Fair and museum visits to Mexico City, and a planned visit to Fiji to visit his daughter, but San Miguel de Allende is now home.

Once again, we are charmed by the superb vision of a Spring folly brought to us by
the very accomplished San Miguel based artist, Oscar Aguirre. Many may remember his long run of duty in the Kunsthaus San Miguel years. But the now closed art center has given this artist more time to concentrate on his work and the period has really paid off. We see work with an extremely professional technique, presenting us with scenes of joyous abundance in nature’s delights, one or two with a dark and dystopian vision of the world we are living in to the light and joys of Spring, be they for a passing moment and therefore to be enjoyed while it lasts.

Beautiful birds flock around ripened fruit, with planets of floating light surrounding the scenes. His mixing of colors and movement are a joy to see. We can almost taste the fruit. And the birds? We are lucky to be surrounded by this beautiful array of feathered creatures here in San Miguel, allowing the artist this wealth of birds from which to cull.

Nothing to prove here, no messages, just the joy and beauty that nature and this artist gives us And finally, an artist that paints on canvases of a size most of us can live with, no small fete.

This is the second exhibition this gallery has shown of this artist’s work and happily can attest to his enormous success. His canvases have found their way into the homes of collectors both in Mexico and abroad. So, welcome to the Spring/Summer season with this lovely calling card.

San Miguel de Allende is a high plateau surrounded by low mountains and passing forests, making for idealistic settings for naturalist like Eduardo Rincon.

For many years now, this extraordinary artist has carefully cataloged the generous growths, especially that of the Mexican oak trees, the robles and encinos which lushly cover the surrounding hills. These generous woods are found in many local artisan created furniture, but for Rincon, are the inspiration to create exquisitely detailed, soulful vistas, paintings and drawings with growths culled from his extensive walks and investigations. The artist gives us oil paintings of forests, watercolor/drawings of stems and leaves, a few young sprigs presented to us as if to underline the growths he chooses to paint. His technique is subtle with an exquisite use of color and tone on highly skilled drawings.

Somehow, there is something very old school, very romantic about this work, so reminiscent of the 19th century Victorian naturalists; a welcome vision in these very hectic, difficult times we are living in.

And perhaps for this very reason, Eduardo Rinconś art is cherished and collected both in Mexico and abroad.

Al regresar de la inauguración de su gran exposición en el Museo de Arte Abstracto Manuel Felguérez en Zacatecas, Pascual Hijuelos se puso inmediatamente a trabajar en una nueva serie de pinturas. Pero a diferencia de sus habituales trabajos de campo de color, fantásticamente dramáticos y duros, estas nuevas creaciones han adquirido una dimensión más suave. Los colores bellamente representados todavía están ahí, pero las formas geométricas de bordes duros han dado paso a curvas suaves e igualmente dramáticas. A simple vista, algunas de las curvas parecen moverse.

Orgulloso de su herencia cubana, Hijuelos parece seleccionar cosas de la tierra de sus padres; su obra tiene ritmo, es sensual y parece vivir a su propio ritmo alegre.

Habiendo sido aprendiz de algunos de los artistas de la Escuela de Arte de Nueva York en aquellas embriagadoras décadas posteriores a la guerra, Hijuelos aprendió bien. El artista finalmente se mudó a México después de exitosas exhibiciones en la escena artística de Nueva York, viajar por Europa y sumergirse con avidez en los diversos géneros del arte contemporáneo de posguerra. La mudanza parece conectarlo más con sus raíces latinas. El artista cuenta entre sus coleccionistas con expertos neoyorquinos y sofisticados de la Ciudad de México. Hay viajes ocasionales a Miami y Nueva York, visitas a ferias de arte y museos en la Ciudad de México, y un viaje planificado a Fiji para visitar a su hija, pero San Miguel de Allende es su casa ahora.

Una vez más, estamos encantados con la magnífica visión de una locura primaveral que nos trae el consumado artista radicado en San Miguel, Oscar Aguirre. Muchos recordarán su largo desempeño en los años del Kunsthaus San Miguel. Pero el centro de arte, que ya cerró, le ha dado a este artista más tiempo para concentrarse en su trabajo y el período realmente ha valido la pena. Vemos obras con una técnica extremadamente profesional, presentándonos escenas de gozosa abundancia en los placeres de la naturaleza, una o dos con una visión oscura y distópica del mundo en el que vivimos hasta la luz y las alegrías de la primavera, ya sea por un momento pasajero. y por lo tanto para disfrutarlo mientras dure.

Hermosos pájaros vuelan alrededor de frutas maduras, con planetas de luz flotante rodeando las escenas. Es un placer ver su mezcla de colores y movimiento. Casi podemos saborear la fruta. ¿Y los pájaros? Tenemos suerte de estar rodeados de esta hermosa variedad de criaturas emplumadas aquí en San Miguel, lo que le permite al artista tener esta gran cantidad de aves para seleccionar.

No hay nada que demostrar aquí, ni mensajes, solo la alegría y la belleza que nos brinda la naturaleza y este artista. Y finalmente, un artista que pinta sobre lienzos de un tamaño con el que la mayoría de nosotros podemos vivir, no es poca cosa.

Esta es la segunda exposición que esta galería muestra del trabajo de este artista y felizmente puedo dar fe de su enorme éxito. Sus lienzos han llegado a los hogares de coleccionistas tanto en México como en el extranjero. Entonces, bienvenido a la temporada Primavera/Verano con esta encantadora tarjeta de visita.

San Miguel de Allende es un altiplano rodeado por montañas y bosques de paso, que rinden el paisaje ideal para un naturalista como Eduardo Rincón.

Desde hace muchos años, este artista extraordinario cataloga cuidadosamente la abundancia de plantas, sobre todo de los robles mexicanos, los encinos y los mezquites que cubren exuberantemente las colinas circundantes. Las maderas de esos árboles se encuentran en muchos muebles creados por artesanos locales, pero para Rincón son la inspiración para crear vistas, pinturas y dibujos exquisitamente detallados y conmovedores con plantas, extraídos de sus extensos paseos e investigaciones. El artista nos regala pinturas al óleo de bosques, acuarelas/dibujos de tallos y hojas, y algunas ramitas jóvenes que se nos presentan como para subrayar los crecimientos que elige pintar. Su técnica es sutil con un uso exquisito del color y el tono en dibujos de gran habilidad.

De alguna manera, hay algo muy de la vieja escuela, muy romántico en esta obra, que recuerda tanto a los naturalistas victorianos del siglo XIX; una visión bienvenida en estos tiempos tan agitados y difíciles que vivimos.

Y quizás por esta misma razón, el arte de Eduardo Rinconś es apreciado y coleccionado tanto en México como en el extranjero.
