San Miguel Playreaders presents Dancing at Lughnasa, written by Brian Friel and directed by Susan Rushton.

Perhaps the most famous of modern Irish playwrights, Brian Friel is often compared to Chekhov, whom he greatly admired. Arguably, Dancing at Lughnasa is Friel’s greatest play — a tender, poetic exploration of memory, love, and survival.

The story follows five spinster sisters — Kate, Agnes, Margaret, Christina, and Rose — living near the fictional Irish town of Ballybeg in County Donegal during the summer of 1936. Their world is changing rapidly, and the new technology of the wireless radio brings both joy and disruption. Their brother Jack, a priest returning from twenty-five years in Uganda, has been deeply transformed by his encounters with another culture and religion — reminding the family that dance and ritual are universal.

The play premiered at The Abbey Theatre in Dublin in 1990 and won numerous awards, including the 1992 Tony Award for Best Play. It has been performed around the world, including right here in San Miguel, where it was last produced in 2002 by the late Fran Rowe Robbins.

Featuring Marjorie Burren, Anne Campbell, Rick Franz, Marthe Fraser, Gina Giampaoli Alderton, Phoebe Greyson, Gene Harvey, and Frank Simons. Teleprompter scrolling by Desiree Duncan, lighting and sound by Miguel Torres.

Don’t miss this moving and timeless story — a celebration of love, resilience, and the dance that unites us all.
