Maruja González’s artistic evolution from early figurative art to her later vibrant, color field abstractions culminates in a series of superb expressionist abstractions which
define her mature works.

Much like great masters before here such as Pasmore, Afro and Mondrian but to name a few, Maruja’s art included beautifully rendered views of the great Cuban fort El Moro, entering the city of Havana from the sea. The artist often mentions her love for that city in which she was born and these paintings are an exquisite testament of this sentiment.

But much a creature of her time, Maruja was swept up with the excitement and richness of the second half of the 2Oth century: such artist as Burri, Twombly, Afro, Sam Frances, Frankenthaler and their extraordinary use of color and movement.

The selection of paintings chosen for this exhibition are characterized by a gestural and instinctive painting style. She has a great eye for color, using it generously with much respect for the intrinsic value of each color tone. There are flowing movements in her
brush strokes as color seems to dance across the picture plane.

One can’t help but wonder why she has waited so long before sharing this wealth of work.
