Make a small box of balsa and pine with one side open to capture a dream. The box resembles a little theater set, a place with birds and trees and people made out of a variety of metals. This is Susan Fiori's art. Her treatment of materials is an integral part of her work. Using a jeweler's saw she cuts nickel, brass, and copper into intricate shapes and patterns creating visual narratives. In "Red Hair, Green Hat, Gold Crown" there are patterns in the figure's hair, on her face and on her dress. On the outside of the box is a metal relief of a curling stem with leaves. Fiori paints all of the pieces with inks or acrylics so the inside of the box sparkles. Fiori says, "I am intrigued by metal, the alchemy of it, the way it softens if you torch it, hardens when you pound it, changes colors through heat, and is disguised by paint." The images spring from her love of folklore, spirituality, dreams and meditations.
Take a length of translucent drafting film, stain it, paint it, draw on it, collage it. This is Kathleen Cammarata's art. The material allows her to work from both the front and back. Drafting film is a polyester sheet treated with a matte resin which contains microscopic silica particles on one side to give it a frosted "tooth" that grips pencil and paint. The drafting film can be cut and layered without rips and tears. It is archival in that it never shrinks or yellows with age. In her Leaf and Cloud series parts of the figure are painted with acrylic and parts are drawn with pencil. In "Leaf and Cloud 4" the drafting film is painted with acrylic then cut out in leaf shapes and collaged onto the head of the figure. The clouds on the body and the growth on the ground are drawn in pencil. Cammarata says,"I am fascinated by the gauziness and the versatility of the film which fosters experimentation and mixing of mediums. Her imagery is feminist based.
Both artists work can be seen at Cammarata's studio, Sunday September 20 from 1 to 4 pm. Alameda 6, Colonia San Antonio.
