Poetry and Prose Café, Personal History

Thursday, January 8, 4–6pm
Café Rama, Nemesio Diez 10
$100

Featuring original work read by Judith Jenya, Rosemary Davis, Joanne Godley, and Jan Baross, curated by Rosaleen Bertolino.

Please join us for our first event of 2026 at Café Rama, where four remarkable women writers explore the intersection of the personal and the historic — escaping from Bakersfield, “falling from the sky” with the Black Panthers, visiting a member of the Lincoln Battalion in San Francisco’s North Beach, and zig-zagging between the US Midwest and Afghanistan.

Judith Jenya has published essays, memoir, fiction, and poetry, including a bilingual poetry collection, Aromas de Dos Pueblos. Her memoir, *Memories Do Not Burn*, has been shared at book festivals, clubs, and readings. A National Endowment for the Arts fellow, she was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and named International Humanist of the Year in 2002.

Rosemary Davis, with an MFA from Hamline University, is a Loft poetry fellow whose work appears in journals, anthologies, and newspapers. She curated the Twin Cities reading series “A Language We Speak” for a decade and is the author of the memoir *Before They Left Us*.

Joanne Godley, a three-time Pushcart and Best-of-the-Net nominee with an MFA from Pacific University, has work in The Kenyon Review Online, The Massachusetts Review, Crab Orchard Review, and more. Her memoir-in-verse *How the Black Panthers Fell From the Sky* won the 2025 Naomi Madgett Long Award and will be published in 2026.

Jan Baross — novelist, documentarian, photographer, screenwriter, playwright, librettist, and critic — taught filmmaking at Oregon State University. Her debut novel *Jose Builds a Woman* won first place for fiction and received praise from Ursula Le Guin.

Poetry & Prose Cafés present local and visiting writers reading original work monthly through March. Seating is limited to 50 and first-come, first-served. Doors open at 4pm; reading begins at 4:30. Admission is free; donations of $100 pesos are suggested. Café Rama offers a special discounted menu for attendees.
