San Miguel Playwrights 2025 Winter Showcase
by Meredith Beaumont
San Miguel's Playwrights bring their latest productions to the local theatre scene at the end of January with their all new 10-minute Play Festival. Seven plays by seven different writers will be performed at the Teatro Santa Ana in the Biblioteca Publica and will feature locally-known actors and directors. Always eclectic, frequently electrifying and invariably entertaining, the selection ranges through terror, passion, the supernatural, light comedy, and complete and utter farce.
A Russian spy skulks by the reception desk, there's a hitman in the lobby, and an enlisted sailor is on the prowl for sexual favors. It's just another afternoon at one of New York's finest hostelries. Or is it? The Westminster Dog Show is in town and staff and guests, alike, contend for an existential podium in Anne Campbell's new play, Late Afternoon at the Plaza Hotel.
When glasses clink in an office in New York – carefully mixed Manhattans of course – a top psychologist and a beautiful law student down their drinks and begin an illusory interplay. Out of the otherworldly haze, Cynthia Posner's first play with the Showcase, Many Lives, Many Manhattans, evokes distant trauma and residual guilt; and reaches an unexpected resolution.
There's thunder and lightning and impending doom as two complete strangers turn a local social media platform into a casualty-strewn battlefield. Ben Widdicombe‘s first play with the Showcase, Reasonable, turns reality upside down as we root for the bad guys in this comedy of bad manners.
Colourful cockney, George Needles, is contemplating a slow afternoon when he spies the newly emboldened Maud, peering through the window of his shopfront. As she enters Marilyn Bullivant's gothic creation, Come into the Parlour, Maud, she is drawn into a whole new world of mythical imagery and imagination.
Playwright Lia Gladstone ferries us through the inside passage of southeast Alaska in her latest appetizer, Herring Rock. As fish teem in the spring-runoff fisherman, young and old, vie for the biggest prize of their lives and it's winner takes all. When a local and feisty reporter wiles her way onto the prize-winning boat, she helps change more than just the rules of the game.
In old San Miguel de Allende a wealthy dead woman, her hair stylist, and her housekeeper and her husband confide their tales of woe and suspicion. How did La Doña die and who inherited her home and money? Lauren Volpini's grisly Murder on Callejón de los Muertos, the Alley of the Dead, reveals a dark betrayal.
In Martin Cohen's play, The Fire Within, a liberal university professor takes an academic position in a conservative community, with disastrous consequences. Can anything smooth over the abuse and worry this is causing his traumatized wife and daughter? Enter the family lawyer, whose influence and ingenuity seem to pave the way to a less bumpy future.
