Please join us on Thursday, February 5, at 4pm at Café Rama for our second event of 2026. February can be bleak in many parts of the world, but in San Miguel, the weather is warming, the skies are clear, and what better time could there be than to listen to some remarkable writing exploring fresh starts? After all, there is nothing more human than getting back up, dusting yourself off, and moving forward.

Featuring original work read by
Roberta Schine
Laurie McDonald
Robin Schoenthaler
Anne Damrosch
Introduced by Rosaleen Bertolino

Roberta Schine, an immigration activist and retired yoga teacher, began writing in 2020 with the late, beloved Maia Williams. Her stories have appeared in Portside, Rattapallax, The Forward, Gallery and Studio, The Village Sun, Hawansuyo (in Spanish), among others. In 2024 her coverage of elections and politics received an award from the New York Press Association. The working title of her forthcoming book is Once I Was Having Sex with Rabbi Birnbaum and He Died.

Laurie McDonald is a writer, media artist, graphic designer, and photographer. Writing as Eva Rome, she has published three books: Travel for STOICs; What It Means: Myth, Symbol, and Archetype in the Third Millennium, Vol. 1; and Location X: A Quest for Place. A National Endowment for the Arts Visual Artist Fellowship recipient, her work has been exhibited internationally and distributed by the Video Data Bank in Chicago. Robin Schoenthaler is an essayist, storyteller, and cancer doctor. She lives in Boston, where she worked as an oncologist at Massachusetts General Hospital for three decades. She writes essays and tells stories about cancer, calamity, Covid, love, loss, and, lately, a collection of life lessons. She has won numerous awards for her essays over the years, but the one she is proudest of is winning a Moth Grand Slam. This is her second full winter in San Miguel, and she loves it here.

Born on Earth Day, Anne Damrosch was raised in New York and the Berkshires. After working as a pediatric nurse in Deschapelles, Haiti, in the 1980s, she moved to Vermont, where she worked in the field of play therapy with children and families. Throughout her life, poetry has been a shining thread weaving together her love of children, animals, home and garden, and all things green and growing on our astounding planet.

San Miguel de Allende Poetry & Prose Cafés present local and visiting writers reading original work once monthly through March. Seating is limited to 50 people and is first-come, first-served. Doors open at 4pm; the reading begins promptly at 4:30. Admission is free. The organization is supported solely by contributions. Please also support our venue, Café Rama, which offers a special menu with discounted prices for these events.

El título provisional de su próximo libro es Once I Was Having Sex with Rabbi Birnbaum and He Died.

Escribiendo bajo el seudónimo Eva Rome, ha publicado tres libros: Travel for STOICs; What It Means: Myth, Symbol, and Archetype in the Third Millennium, Vol. 1; y Location X: A Quest for Place.
