San Miguel Playreaders presents the lovely Shirley Valentine.
Shirley Valentine is a one-character play by Willy Russell. Taking the form of a monologue by a middle-aged, working class, Liverpool housewife, it echoes with uncanny familiarity the internal dialogue of lives half lived, choices not quite made and longings muffled under layers of insidious resignation. Shirley is a fighter and buoyed by an irrepressible sense of irony and humor, her daily dialogues with the kitchen wall (which evidences listening skills vastly superior to those of her “feller”) eventually lead her to the realization that the unthinkable is in fact not only thinkable but necessary. Her voyage from prisoner to architect of her own life is one that we are eager to share. There’s a lesson here. And happy endings.
SMA Playreaders’ Shirley Valentine stars Susan Rushton. Lights and sound are handled by Miguel Torres, Roger Johns is the teleprompter operator and Marthe Fraser directs.
Performance dates are Wednesday, February 18 and Thursday, February 19.
The Santa Ana Theater at the Biblioteca Pública, Calle Relox #50A.

San Miguel Playreaders presenta la encantadora Shirley Valentine.
Shirley Valentine es una obra unipersonal de Willy Russell. En forma de monólogo de una ama de casa de Liverpool, de clase trabajadora y mediana edad, resuena con una familiaridad inquietante el diálogo interno de vidas a medio vivir, decisiones no del todo tomadas y anhelos amortiguados bajo capas de resignación insidiosa. Shirley es una luchadora y, animada por un sentido irreprimible de ironía y humor, sus diálogos diarios con la pared de la cocina (que demuestra habilidades de escucha muy superiores a las de su “marido”) finalmente la conducen a la realización de que lo impensable no solo es pensable sino necesario. Su viaje de prisionera a arquitecta de su propia vida es uno que estamos deseosos de compartir. Hay una lección aquí. Y finales felices.
La producción de SMA Playreaders está protagonizada por Susan Rushton. Las luces y el sonido están a cargo de Miguel Torres, Roger Johns es el operador del teleprompter y la dirección es de Marthe Fraser.
