Rosemary Davis Photography Weekend, Two Sides
Meet our local artist!
There are two sides to everything, even photography. Black and White verses Color… Light versus Shadow… Day verses Night.
Local photographer, Rosemary Davis explores these dichotomies in her photographic study of Mexico and San Miguel de Allende in particular.
“Every experience for me begins with images. I’ve spent most of my life behind cameras and lenses, and even without them; my eyes are still the first to search and question. If a subject makes me grab a camera, those lenses, I’m all in.”
Place is important to Davis. Before spending 42 years in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, she lived in Tucson, Arizona and in the Bay Area of San Francisco, with a short stop in Washington, D.C. Davis moved to San Miguel three years ago, and lives here full time.
While in the Twin Cities, Davis facilitated A.P.E. (Architectural Photography Enthusiasts) and she is currently a member of the Photo Graphic Gallery group here in SMA. She has been exhibiting in the U.S. for the past 25 years, especially at the Praxis Photo Arts Center in Minneapolis, and The SE Center for Photography in Greenville, South Carolina. She holds an AS degree in Photography from San Francisco City College.
“Buildings, structures, and facsimiles of people intrigue me. I like to shoot anything historic – old clocks, mailboxes, mannequins, and antiques. I witness whatever the subject requires, reveals, or resonates. My body of work is diverse: portraits, editorial, nature, events, abstracts. I’m most interested in geography, architecture, black & white interior details, and travel photography. Clouds!”
There are also two sides to Rosemary Davis’ creative life. After working 30 years in the video/film business, she turned to writing. That has been an obsession for the past 20 years. Davis is a published travel writer, poet and essayist. Her lyrical San Francisco memoir, Before They Left Us, was published in 2018. But, through it all, Davis’ camera remained a companion. Still is. And now it has followed her to Mexico as well.
“My growing up years in Milwaukee gave me a grounded Midwestern attitude. While my time there did not prepare me for Mexico living, days crossing into border towns from Tucson hinted to the possibilities, although none were as beautiful as San Miguel de Allende.
It has been very rewarding to continue my photography practice here. Whether with my camera or phone, there is more color, more shapes, more architecture to keep me engaged for years to come.”
“Part of the whole process of being a photographer for me is presenting the work to an audience. I need and want responses of all kinds in order to both share my vision and learn from feedback. No matter what, I make time to get my photography into the public sector. I realize how important it is to create images that will educate, tell stories, and evoke emotional responses.”
Bordello Galería is honored to host the Rosemary Davis Exhibit for this two day event. Davis will be present and welcomes your comments, compliments, and critiques as she hopes to evoke at least TWO SIDES to her picture stories.
Please enjoy the hospitality of this artist-writer-photographer on the Fountain Terrace at Casa de la Noche Saturday and Sunday March 15 and 16. Bordello GalerÍa is located at Organos 19, 1/2 block off Hernandes Macias in Centro.
