Hailing from Texas, with an eclectic background that included performing with whips, Merry was the first artist to establish an art studio at Fabrica la Aurora. Her stone studio was the factory's tool shop. Now a light, airy space, Gallery Calderoni still contains the original forge and some ancient tools.

She protests, "I was only looking for a place to paint and give flight to my creativity." However, her effort and perseverance set the tone for converting the old textile factory into an art space. Following her lead other artists arrived, motivated by an ambiance that gave flight to creativity. Merry Calderoni was largely responsible for giving la Fabrica the cultural significance it has today.

Strong colors and an emphasis on textures are the characteristics that define a painting by Calderoni. Mixed techniques converge, including encaustic (use of wax as a binder for pigments), collage, oxidized metals, fabrics, old prints, among others elements. An atmosphere of warm colors, ancestral walls and old patinas, among other resources, evoke messages from the past.

Currently I am painting abstract expressionism. My paintings are adventures into mazes or puzzles, with unknown content and without a plan. The end product will be the result of fitting together the pieces of the puzzle, or getting through the maze with many varieties of tools and mediums, using color, texture, line, gestures, forms and other elements to complete the final painting. The mystery of the experiment and the unknown result of the journey are the reason I paint. A successful painting is never guaranteed. Activating the viewer’s curiosity or imagination is an extra bonus.
