Tibetan Monks in San Miguel
program - August 9-20

August 6, 2023

Gaden Shartse Monastic University

Gaden was originally founded in Tibet by Lama Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), a great master dharma reformer and Tibetan Buddhist scholar.

In the year 1409, Lama Tsongkhapa established the Gaden Monastery, and from its founding, the Gelugpa School of Tibetan Buddhism, also known as the Yellow Hat Section, was developed.

Gaden Monastery was one of the Den-sa-sum, the three most famous monasteries in Tibet. There are two colleges within the Gaden Monastery, the Shartse to the east and the Jangtse to the west. Gaden Monastery had a population of more than 3,300 monks during the early 20th century. Later, in the 1950s, the monastery's population grew to 5,000 monks. Gaden quickly became famous for their moral discipline and their academic and spiritual values. Regardless of specialized studies, all the monks studied religious music, art, sculpture, administrative work, etc., in both the Shartse and Jangtse colleges, Sutra and Buddhist Tantra are taught and practiced in a combined program.

In 1950 the Chinese People's Liberation Army invaded and occupied Tibet. In 1959 His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India for his safety and that of the Tibetans.

In 1970 the Gaden Monastery reincarnated when Gaden Shartse Monastery was established by 85 refugee monks near the remote village of Mundgod, in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Today the Gaden Monastery has more than 1,400 Tibetan scholars, writers, students, and administrators who are organized by Khangtsen, which are like small monasteries within the great monastery that is Gaden.

For 31 years, the Pneuma Institute and its director Juan Ruiz Naupari have had the privilege of carrying out the World Tour for Inner Peace with the Tibetan monks of the Gaden Shartse Monastic University in India.

This tour is part of a Pneuma Institute Solidarity program called Maitreya Buddha; a program focused on the reconstruction and improvement of the Gaden Shartse monastery as well as the education of its monks since 1992.

In 2004, the Pneuma Institute and its director organized His Holiness the Dalai Lama's visit to Puerto Rico, and in 2011 they sponsored the Maitreya Buddha Empowerment given by His Holiness for the first time in India.

In 2019, together with the Gaden Shartse Monastery, they coordinated the commemoration of the sixth centenary of the ascension to Nirvana of the Great Lama Tsongkhapa, creator of the Gelugpa lineage, celebrated in India with the support of His Holiness. Once again, at the request of the Gaden Shartse Monastery and with the blessing of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we are very happy to announce the Inner Peace Tour for the years 2023-2024.

The Pneuma Institute is a non-profit organization with a presence in Latin America, the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and the East. Its commitment is to work for the awakening of the essential values of the human being, and to promote Inner Peace as an essential element to promote Global Peace.

Projects

Among the projects that must be developed or concluded at the monastery are the construction of study rooms, bedrooms, the improvement and maintenance of the library, sanitary facilities, achieving better hygiene conditions and as a special aim of this 2023- 2024 tour, the construction of a medical clinic, the purchase of medical equipment and medicines to ensure the health of the monks.

In Tibetan Buddhism it is considered that the fate of people has a karmic cause, and that many of life's problems, such as the many difficulties and diseases that cause human suffering, have their origin in this life or in past lives. However, they also have methods on how to address these challenges. The activities carried out by the monks aim to return to the participants the integral well-being, which is achieved through spiritual and energetic purification.

Free: Opening Conference Wednesday August 9th @ 7:00 PM (1 hour)
KARMA AND COMPASSION

The topics addressed in the conferences aim to touch on several important areas related to the spiritual development of human beings, considering that each law and many phenomena exist by relativity or interdependence. They are basic themes of Tibetan Buddhism that serve as an introduction to this philosophy and offer us simple tools to start a path towards self-realization.

Free: ENVIRONMENTAL HEALING CEREMONY Sunday August 13th 10:00 AM (1 ½ hours) at the Botanical Gardens EL CHARCO DEL INGENIO
Please come prepared with gear for sun or rain and arrive at least 15 minutes before the ceremony begins.

PUJAS (HARMONIZING PRAYERS)
Pujas will be held the first week of the conference. The "pujas" are prayers and blessings that Tibetan monks have performed since time immemorial in order to harmonize the energies of people, homes, and companies. Their realization provides well-being to the participants, improves their quality of life, and serves to increase faith and energy in the spiritual path. The "pujas" are accompanied by offerings to the Divinities, Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and protectors, with the aim of removing all obstacles, negative energy and disharmony. Traditional Tibetan instruments such as the dorje, the Damaru bell, a small ritual drum, cymbals and sometimes trumpets, generate an emotionally intense and moving atmosphere, sometimes also cause an intense visual impact due to the colors of the instruments and clothing used.

VAJRAVIDHARAN PURIFICATION CEREMONIES will be held both Saturdays of the conference at 10 AM and 12 PM
This purification provides a deep cleansing of body, speech, and mind. Vajravidharan or Dorye Namyom in Tibetan means: "Supreme Destroyer of Evil." It is a deity of Tibetan esoteric Buddhism specialized in the purification of people and objects and one of the main deities of Tantra Yoga meditation.

It is a very powerful ceremony performed through Vajravidharan to cleanse the body, speech and mind of all possible entities that contaminate the material or the spiritual world.

For millennia, the great Tibetan yogis lived long, healthy, and prosperous lives due to the practice of Vajravidharan. This ceremony is performed in 3 phases. The teacher takes the form of Vajravidharan thanks to a previous meditation and uses his power to cleanse people, removing current negative energies, then their residues, and finally protecting and freeing them from premature death, disease, illness, etc. influence of the stars, as well as envy and congenital factors.

This ritual increases the person's personal power, self-healing abilities, and positive energy. It cleans the chakras and subtle energies of the body. It decreases frustration, depression, and anxiety. It helps to eliminate negative dreams and nightmares, brings health, happiness, longevity, and success.

MANTRA: NAMA TSANDA, VAJRA KRODAYA, HULU HULU, TISHTA
TISHTA, BANDA BANDA, HANA HANA, AMRITA, HUM PHAT.

HOME and BUSINESS BLESSINGS will be held daily by appointment.
These blessings are rituals to purify places and the people who live or work in them. They are ceremonies performed by a monk. Family and friends can be invited to these ceremonies if it is a home; and work colleagues if it is a company. In Tibetan culture, harmonizing prayers for homes and businesses are a common and ancient practice.

CHILDREN'S BLESSING
The intention of this beautiful practice is to help the child not have obstacles in his personal development. In this ceremony, all the Buddhas are invoked and asked to help children develop their virtues. Protection, health, and wisdom are also requested. The Children's Blessing will be held at the Botanical Gardens EL CHARCO DEL INGENIO @ 10 AM, Sunday, August 20th

DOCTOR Ngawang Tsering Jangpa, internationally renowned, will be offering the following:

TIBETAN KU-NYE MASSAGE will be available daily throughout the conference by appointment. Ku-Nye is beneficial as a stand-alone treatment, as well as a preventative measure against disease and a supportive treatment alongside other modalities. It is a great way to relax and promote general health and well-being. In your Ku-Nye treatment, you can receive advice on diet, herbs and health according to the four seasons. Since ancient times in Tibet, Ku-Nye has been believed to aid longevity by clearing and sharpening the sensory organs while supporting internal organ function. Therefore, it is very effective for rejuvenation, relaxation, opening of channels (tendons, ligaments, nerves), gives complexion and shine to the body and makes the skin smoother. Oil massage is especially effective against rough skin caused by lung disorders, deficiency, general body weakness, depression, insomnia, and a tired body.

INDIVIDUAL TIBETAN MASSAGE SESSION DURATION: 45 minutes. The Tibetan Massage or "Ku Nye" is part of the external therapies of Tibetan medicine to maintain good health. Soft, slow and deep: three concepts that characterize and define this age-old massage. The manipulation techniques used include rubbing and/or kneading, gentle stretching on a stretcher, and various frictions with the tips of the fingers, palms, knuckles, and elbows on muscle areas, lines, and energy points. Additionally, deep circular movements are applied to acupressure points. The oil used in the massage treatment not only acts as a lubricant but helps to keep the "air" element balanced. Those who have experienced Tibetan massage for therapeutic purposes or for relaxation, report a number of benefits for general health and well-being, including improved metabolism rate, more restful sleep, higher energy levels, better appetite, and an elevated mood.

TIBETAN MEDICAL CONSULTATION will be available daily by appointment. Traditional Tibetan Medicine or "Sowa Rigpa" is the healing science in Tibet. It has its roots in Bon shamanism, dating back over 2,500 years. It formally developed in the fourth century, out of the Hindu (Ayurveda), Greek, Persian (Unani), and Chinese medical systems. Its current form, which differed in the twelfth century, was definitely associated with Buddhism.

Tibetan medicine is deeply influenced by Buddhist theory and practice that emphasize the indivisible interdependence between body, mind, soul, energy, and environment. Healing is aimed at balancing the 3 basic principles: Moon or movement, Gut or heat and Baken or cold, since it is considered that disease is the result of imbalances in these forces. The consultation is carried out by taking pulses, and by means of a personal interview, the general state of the person and of each specific organ is evaluated, as well as the possible symptoms. In this process, urine, tongue, and skin are also analyzed. The technique of diagnosis using pulses is very subtle and complete, years of study are required to learn it and decades to become a specialist. It is performed with the doctor's right hand on the wrist of the patient's left hand; the index finger listens to the heart and the small intestine (the element of fire). The middle finger reads the spleen and stomach (earth). The ring finger reads the left kidney and reproductive organs (water). With the left hand on the right wrist, the index finger reads the lungs and the large intestine (metal). The middle finger reads the liver and the gallbladder (wood). The ring finger reads the right kidney and bladder (water). For the treatment of diseases, natural medicine, massages, acupuncture are mainly used, as well as correcting excesses or errors in the diet and bad habits of life. Sowa Rigpa, based on the Middle Path of Buddhism, seeks to balance the extreme imbalances in the three main energies and in the five elements. From the Buddhist perspective, disease is viewed at its source, which is usually mental or emotional. From this vision, the feeling of individuality (or the self) and the three poisons of the mind (desire, hate and ignorance) give rise to suffering and disease. The three principles relate to poisons as follows: Moon or movement understood as desire and attachment: materialism affects blood, nerve, and energy circulation as well as thoughts and digestion. Gut or heat, understood as aversion, hatred, aggressiveness, or discontent is associated with the assimilation of the liver, vision, and mental functions. Baken or cold is associated with ignorance and misunderstanding. It affects digestion, bone structure, joints, and mental stability.

The medicines consist of 250 different preparations and are composed of minerals and medicinal plants known in the Himalayas and Tibet. For this purpose, 2,294 medicinal substances are used. During processing, the compounds are blessed and energized according to certain elaborate Buddhist rituals. This medication has no side effects. It is an effective and safe system of medicine that complements Western medicine. As a comprehensive health care system, Tibetan medicine effectively served its people for centuries, and today it can serve all humanity.

Tibetan medicine is especially recommended for:
• Diseases of the nervous system and heart.
• Patients with multiple sclerosis, migraines, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, joint
pain, lower back pain, neck pain, rheumatism, etc.
• Symptoms of menopause.
• Chronic gastric problems, digestive disorders, displacement of the liver, anemia.
• Circulatory problems.
• Allergies, eczema, asthma, sinusitis, rhinitis, and similar conditions.
• It is especially effective for the discomfort of the "windy mood" (anxiety and stress), sleep problems and also for depressive disorders and diseases associated with them. Tibetan medicine is closely related to Tibetan astrology. Although it is not commonly used in the West to make diagnoses, it is used for collecting plants and preparing medicines.

Men-Tsee-Khang is the School of Medicine and Astrology and the main medical institution, founded in 1916 by His Holiness the 13th Dalai Lama in Lhasa. His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama re-established the institution in Dharamsala in 1961 after exile. In it, the Tibetan Doctors are trained in the line of Soria medicines. Tibetan

Doctors are also trained in Varanasi. The Medicine Buddha or Menlha is the archetype that promotes healing. He is a sapphire blue Deity, and his promise is to promote the health of all sentient beings. Although it is not strictly necessary, it is positive to repeat the mantra of this Deity when taking the medicines, since this way they are impregnated with its positive energy.
The mantra of the Medicine Buddha is: TADYATA, OM BEKANDZE BEKANDZE, MAHA BEKANDZE, RADZA SAMUNGATE SOHA!

MEDITATION with TIBETAN SINGING BOWLS Saturday, August 12th, at 7PM
Meditation is a practice with which monks learn to know their minds. The sound of the Singing bowls during meditation helps healing, relaxation and insight. This way, it is possible to establish a healthy vibration throughout the organism, both physically, mentally, or psychologically, emotionally, and spiritually.

PNEUMA BREATHWORK Saturday August 19 th at 4pm
Pneuma Breathwork is a revolutionized, powerful, and profound pranayama technique. When the prana enters through our respiratory system, the heart opens, and the perception of our internal and external reality is perceived in a crystalline and penetrating way. Prana or light atoms stimulate our consciousness towards its awakening. It is a technique for the expansion of consciousness, self-knowledge, and the progressive analysis of the psyche. The breath hold, combined with a specific musical sequence, along with our intention and focused concentration, opens our perception and from there arises an infinite variety of possible experiences. Pneuma Breathing allows us to know more about ourselves, where that nests that does not allow us to move freely in life along the path of peace and harmony with ourselves and with others. This practice is part of the activities of the Inner Peace Tour of the Tibetan monks. In each city, they will offer a Pneuma Breathwork session that will be led by a certified facilitator in Transpersonal Psychology and Pneuma Breathwork. Here, a monk will be beginning with his songs for relaxation at the start of the session. This practice was brought to the Gaden Shartse Monastery in 2017 by the director of the Pneuma Institute, Juan Ruiz Naupari. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PNEUMA BREATHING at www.pneumainstitute.org
