I typically begin with a photo image of the subject. I normally enlarge the photo to trace it onto the canvas, or in the event of a larger subject, project it onto the canvas to create the composition and sketch of the subject. I then do an under-painting in acrylic as a guide for both color and detail.

The next step is to create collage papers in the colors and textures needed for the piece. Using various papers such as rice papers, tissue, books, magazines and more, I hand paint and also print using a Gelli plate, stencils, and other mark making tools, resulting in a palette of papers in unique patterns and designs which are torn or cut into brush stroke sized pieces used to "paint" the image with paper instead of paint. The piece is created using professional quality acrylic paints and then is sealed using a protective light-fast satin varnish to cut down glare allowing the piece to be viewed in any light.

Bio

Barbara Valverde is a self taught artist who began painting in 2010. In 2016 she became Interested in paper collage and created her initial pieces using found papers, magazines, wrapping paper and decorative papers. After playing with the medium for a while she discovered techniques for painting paper primarily using a Gelli plate, stencils and other mark making tools, using a vibrant color palette of professional quality acrylics including metallics and fluorescents.

She describes her hand painted paper collage style as "painting with paper." Her themes include landscapes, cactus, florals, dogs, cats, birds and still life. She uses a variety of papers such as rice paper, tissue, deli paper, magazines, found papers and books, some revealing print in various languages. Her passion is to create the drama of color, light and shadow in paper.
