In the late 1950's American artist, Jasper Johns, began incorporating words into his paintings. By the mid 1960's text-based art began to emerge as Conceptual art. The artworks were not only objects to look at but also ideas to think about.

It was in 1996 that I first embedded writing in my art. I was struggling with a personal problem and was not able to set it aside. I started journaling my thoughts into wet gesso so some of the words would partially dissolve. One year later I was including pieces of poetry in collages. In 2006 I wrote parts of my own poetry into my monoprints.

In my studio, one will see several series of works on paper that include words, partial poems, and entire poems. For example, the Codex series are monoprints that imitate two lined pages of a book with invented lettering as well as authentic writing. There are illegible cursive marks in the ink as if one discovered an old book that was faded in places.

Words have always informed my works on paper.
