by Martín Buen Viaje
It was on my return from our getaway to the sea and the forest, accompnaied by the Amazon (my wife, Diana) and the Little Dragon (our son), when we came across a scene taken from an epic tale. An hour from Pazcuaro, a Celtic blacksmith who seemed to have escaped from the medieval era appeared before us.
Javier Brito Bretòn received us dressed in his typical attire. There, in his colorful skirts, he invited us to his recently-built temple constructed of super-adobe. There, he began to show us his incredible collection of Viking, medieval and Celtic swords. Among them, some from the Renaissance and a wide variety of Scandinavian, Celtic and Viking style knives and weapons. Even tomahawk and scotch axes, tactical weapons and Philippine machetes. It was like being in a living history museum.
Curious to learn more about this unique character, we asked him about his religion, his belief. Thus, we enter a world full of ancient beliefs and Norse mythology, guided by our host.
After about ten minutes, he led us to his workshop. There, taking some dry grass and some stones, he created the first sparks as cavemen would do. We were amazed to see how he lit the fire in the infernal oven, which reached temperatures of over 1600F degrees. He took a piece of metal, probably salvaged from some junkyard, heated it red hot, and placed it on the anvil. With a hammer fit for Thor, he began to forge a sword, blow after blow, filling the air with the echoing sound of his labor.
Inspired by his skill and enthusiasm, we soon organized a medieval workshop to create our own weapons. But not only that, they would also be used to cut cheeses and meats in our future celebrations! Because who said you can't combine the practical with the epic?
Thus concluded our incredible adventure, where history was mixed with reality and where a chance meeting led us to discover the passion of a Celtic forger in the 21st century. Because in each trip, in each meeting, there is a story to tell and a world to explore.
Thank you Javier Brito Bretòn and family for this experience that was forged in our three hearts.
