The concept of beauty in art has been defined and redefined for centuries.

There is the beauty in nature present in the opening of the morning glory, in the closing of the evening sunset, and in the stars and moon at night.

Epochs that Coexist

Beauty in art assigns value and importance to particular images. Archaeologists have not discovered any stage of human existence without art. Because art is imbued with meaning it opens the eyes to see and the brain to imagine. In the painting "Morning Glory with Black" by Georgia O'Keefe the white flower is rendered unnaturally large filling the canvas on all sides except for one black corner. O'Keefe is inviting the viewer to experience the sensuality of the forms as the flower opens and the contrast of its whiteness to the deep black background.

In ugly times of hate, prejudice and violence, art can offer solace. It encourages the imagination to travel beyond daily reality. It is a safe space for the soul. To quote Vincent Van Gogh on painting, art should be that which "springs from the deepest recesses of the soul." He painted "Sunset" with a bright ball of orange sitting on the horizon of a green sky as a lone figure wanders down a path toward that sun. The viewer travels down that same path feeling the quietness at the end of a day.

In my paintings I am attempting to capture a new kind of landscape no longer limited to sky and ground. Since the Hubble and James Webb telescopes have shown us super novas, black holes, and gaseous clouds, we understand our universe is in flux. I try to express with paint that ever changing energy, a new adventure into the beautiful.

I invite you to my studio to witness beauty in figurative drawings and contemporary landscape paintings. I want to have a conversation about what art means to you.
