"Laughter is the closest distance between two people." - Victor Borge

by Stuart Nemtin

Fiddling With The Stories of My Life is my telling my personal stories. It is deeply vulnerable. It hits audiences where they live and struggle. But it is not heavy, because the comedy of the show livens it up. As Emmet Kelly said, "Laughing at me gives the audience a spiritual second wind for going back into the battle of life."

Audiences are moved by seeing how I recovered from a debilitating personal loss I suffered as a young boy. And then they follow my evolution into an artist, actor, musician and clown, who toured for over 35 years in seven countries, on three national television series and headlined with symphony orchestras, in festivals and in concert halls.

I cover it all, swinging from believing I'm just not good enough to thinking I'm too good, too smart, too talented and too special for my own good."

Clowning allowed me to escape the pressure to be great. Clowning is all about playing at failing and making fun of yourself. Audiences cheer my victory over my own taskmasters. That is what this show is about. How we can free ourselves from our own enslaved thinking, that we created as children to survive our traumas.

What is powerful about the process of autobiographical theater is that you get to relive and rewrite your personal script, to transform your view of yourself. In working with my director, Morris Cohen from England, in Zoom sessions over the course of a year, I went from seeing myself as a bullied, weak, victim to being a hero in my life. I stepped into my own greatness, rescuing myself to share my heart and art with the world.

The live fiddling from the very top of the show animates and charms audiences. Like a Pied Piper, and along with the connecting love poems, it adds levels of emotional depth and power.

The intimacy of the Santa Ana Theatre will only enhance the show's impact.

Pierre Mariel said "A good clown makes fun of others. A great clown makes fun of himself," not that I'm saying I am a great clown, but you might.
