Four San Miguel Painters invites visitors to contemplate the intimate worlds that each artist has captured in response to their enduring relationship with Mexico. Finding the extraordinary in the scenes they each paint, the art presented here is a masterful balance of realism and abstraction. Landscapes, architecture, light, street scenes, lush flowers, and references to Mexico's brimming, vibrant culture are collectively what inform each of these painters whose lives, together, span over six decades in their adopted country.

Embracing the essence of tranquility and harmony, our art show aspires to create a visual symphony that transcends boundaries and speaks to the universal language of peace. Through a diverse array of artistic expressions, we aim to evoke a sense of serenity, inviting our audience to immerse themselves in the beauty of stillness, unity, and the profound connection that art can forge. Join us on a journey where each brushstroke, sculpture and creating harmonizes to celebrate the profound peace that resides within us all.

Polly Stark Ortega

Polly Stark Ortega relocated from New York to San Miguel de Allende as a child with her parents and sister in 1973. Raised among a family of artists, her work is often inspired by Mexico's color, craft, folk art, flowers, ephemera, animals, migration, and transience. She studied painting, ceramics and printmaking at the Cleveland Institute of Art and taught printmaking at Centro Cultural El Nigromante and briefly at the Instituto Allende. She has painted more than canvases, having dedicated many years to a successful business in interior surface design and mural commissions. She has exhibited widely throughout Mexico, and has exhibited in the U.S. After a long hiatus due to teaching high school Polly has recently begun exhibiting once again.

Andrew Dearwater

My art does not attempt to prove anything – it does not attempt to moralize or preach. It does attempt to create something that is well done and cared for while being created. It is an attempt to create a thing of beauty and peace – beauty and peace in the spectator as well as beauty and peace in my soul while I paint it. My art's aim is to console my soul, to give it hope and meaning – to create a respite from my unrest.

"To reveal art and conceal the artist is art's aim." - Oscar Wilde

Andy received his BFA in painting in 1982 from the Columbus College of Art and Design, Columbus, Ohio. After working 30 years as an illustrator and graphic designer as well as running his design firm Dearwater Design for 25 years, he started painting again, for himself. Andy moved to San Miguel in 2021 and has loved it ever since. He has traveled many places in Mexico which inspired the works in this Casa Europa exhibition. His subjects range from figurative to landscapes to still life completed in the studio and on location.
